I hope you don't mean me. :? A store employee set them up to play. I was just in there shopping. And although this Fry's has a very large anime section, I didn't buy Lain (or anything that day). I've had Lain since it first came out.

Actually I meant whoever set the video up for play. I didn't really intend to say "That guy DEFINATELY bought Lain because of that video", but was more implying my lack of suprise in the case that he did. Shite, I know at least 5 people who bought the first RahXephon DVD when they saw Euphoria

I talked to the girl who was running all the lighting and visuals at the club and she said she was an AMV fan, had a couple dvd's w/amv's on them and liked to put them on screen some nights.

o_O

At a nightclub?.. :o....

What is (the gravity of) love?.. Baby don't hurt me!.... Don't hurt me!... No more!

yeah, at a nightclub. The sound was not being played of course, but the vids were there to be seen. The girl I talked to said she would play mine if I could get them to her on a dvd, yet I lack a dvd burner. oh well.

Urban legend alert! That's a popular legend. It's partially true, in that Disney really did threaten to sue three daycares over unauthorized use of cartoon characters; the lawsuits were never actually filed, however. http://www.snopes.com/disney/wdco/daycare.htm
....but... it says...
Claim: Disney forced the removal of murals featuring their cartoon figures from the walls of three Florida day care centers.
Status: True.
It says that it's true. it also says:
The threat of legal action did not need to be carried out, as the centers replaced the drawings with cartoon characters belonging to Universal Studios Florida and Hanna-Barbera Productions, who volunteered the use of their character art as part of a publicity ploy.
So if you really wanna get technical, they WOULD have sued. it's just that the daycares changed it. Because the daycare people are nice people who don't want to get the kids caught up in such contreversy (sp?)

i don't care if that last thought was idealistic. It's the way it should be. People who work with kids but don't care about them, or don't care much for them, or care more for money than for them, SHOULD DIE!

ANYWAY... i jusrt realized. i just said almost the exact thing you did. Just in about 300 more characters.

By characters....I mean the letter type, not the cartoon type. At least in that last sentence. Anywhere else, it does mean cartoon characters.

Ok, ok, i'm shutting up.

Ya never know man. Bestbuy's in particular are just about everywhere. At the same time, the probability that an artist or anime company being at that particular Bestbuy and then seeing their video/song on the tv/computer are slim, but the chance still exists yes? ..... Sure unlikely, but still a non-zero percentage probability.
There's a chance that they might just walk into your house one day and see your AMVs too you know |:

tis non-zero : ]
It's true. DUN DUN DUNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNN, but I'm willing to take that gamble.

Obviously someone playing someone else's videos at a commercial store is something different entirely.
I wouldnt mind at all if my amv was being shown out in the public ... free publicity for me and the anime company. Everyone would be happy, but i can see the complications already ... copy right laws that some people take seriously and they'll sue others to get some money o something out of it.

So thats the legal side of this mess ... but the chances of that happening is very slim but possible ... and if the store is showing them, then the creator wouldnt get sued, the store would ... ... but thats the way this world is, suing people here and there ... :(

Heheh, that got me laughing. I've done work for Disney, I'll never go back unless I'm really really hungry.

In the (admitedly non-zero probability) that someone sees their work being glorified in the form of an AMV, and don't like it, they can always ask that it be taken off, or deleted. It's like singers getting pissed at a DJ when they mix a song into at a rave or something. DJ's basically take the music and mix it up, we just add video, and more brains into the equation.

Forced the removal? True. Sued? False. In a way, that's worse... not only is America the land of the free and the home of the brave where you can push people around by suing them, but it's actually the place where you can get what you want just by threatening without even having to do the dirty work, if you're big enough. Last time I was living in those conditions was immediately before I dropped out of school...
