Urban legend alert! That's a popular legend. It's partially true, in that Disney really did threaten to sue three daycares over unauthorized use of cartoon characters; the lawsuits were never actually filed, however. http://www.snopes.com/disney/wdco/daycare.htmdwchang wrote:A) they're not bitches like Disney (come on, they sued a kindergarten)

So...
Does anyone know, as in YOU, or someone you actually know and trust have an example where a company was pissed about using their product? I mean most people on the site are pretty anal about buying the material, DVD's and CD's from what I've seen. Yes, I know there are lots of fansubs and kazaa addicts out there, But even then, can you think of an example? The way I see AMV making is like making a compilation CD from stuff you already own, the only caveat is that the Fair use law prohibits you from selling or charging to see it. right?
Hell I'm a teacher, and I've usually got a disk playing on a monitor in the back of my room three days a week, (witness the massive downloading I've done) am I really teaching kids to become digital outlaws, or to be creative? Has this forum turned into a strange sort of south park style parody? Did Revolutions really suck as bad as I thought?

It wasn't a generic ending, and although I didn't really like the ending, i respect it.madbunny wrote: Did Revolutions really suck as bad as I thought?

And one question: If someone was playing your music or you anime (which you put thousands/millions into acquiring) in a public place, without your permission, wouldn't that piss you off? Does it really matter if they catch you or not.
I'm not a legal nut, but I do think people should practice more empathy (whether it be the riaa or file sharing nuts). Some things just shouldn't be done, even if there's a 0% chance of you getting caught. Our society would be better if we all tried a little harder to look out for each other, even if there's no chance that we'll benefit. We call that having class. -_-
...but I'm just a no-name here, so you might as well forget my opinion...

Wait a second, I coulda sworn this thread was supposed to be about how seeing an AMV being viewed by other people in common places was flattering. ::blink::

I'd be pretty jazzed if I saw my stuff playing somewhere. As for the artist, getting upset about their music, movie being used I supposed it depends on the person and the circumstance. I mean, if you saw your stuff being shown at a party or best buy you would be happy right? But if you saw your same videos on the extra features of some DVD and ADV was making money off your work would you feel the same way? (personally I'd go with it as long as I got credit)ANTDrakko wrote:....

I always stress to my students to never steal other peoples video footage, and ideally not to copy too much. Everybody gets the DVD at the end of the semester with all the videos on it, everybody is happy. Hell most people are happy just being able to show someone their work and hear "that's pretty cool" or "awesome" or "how did you do that" right?
And I still feel that revolutions sucked pretty hard.
10 reasons why: (spoilers)
1) 8.5 hours of movies and there are still gaping plot holes
2) Agents that can teleport, and outrace bullets (movie one) suddenly turn storm trooper, can't shoot or fight decently anymore. They are software right? Shouldn't they be able to just upgrade to laserbeam eyes or something?
3) machine city is guarded by squid shooting robots that you can just fly right over
4) machine city has a huge talking head just waiting around, and it doesn't even sing any 80's tunes.
5) Neo basically turns into 'Kung Fu Jesus'
6) The primary defence of any use to the humans is EMP, yet they don't bother to shield their equipment. The primary detterent to the machines is EMP, yet they have huge arcs of electricity shooting off all over the place.
7) People have these lightning bolt throwing thingies that seem to kick ass against squiddies, yet none of the mecha bots (which did look cool, I'll admit) have one, instead they have to be realoaded by a dude with a wheelbarrow in the middle of a firefight
8) We are supposed to accept that software has emotion, AND that Keanu can emote at the same time. Take the Keanu 2x4 test: place a 2x4 next to your television during the next movie that you see with him in it, look only at the board during his scenes and see if it improves the movie
9) The new oracle, that was the smoothest transition of the year wasn't it?
10) The human guy going on about "Mr Anderson, I've killed you once" and "Mr Anderson, I hate the stench of this flesh" and watching Neo just..not..get..it..
11) the sex scene during the rave
12) The squid things attack by following the squid in front of it and forming a giant conga snake instead of using a swarm mechanism. Maybe they had a galaga mod.
13) the homeless dude that ran the train: he needs to be ported to a Mac he's pretty hideous
14) Maurovingian basically being reduced to talking in a menacing french accent and eating olived in a menacing way
I could go on and on, thereby and thereby deny anyone else stuff to add, but I won't.

Holy crap! People are makin' money off of my videos?!? Ohhh they are in for some serious CHEESE SLAPPIN'.But if you saw your same videos on the extra features of some DVD and ADV was making money off your work would you feel the same way?
...hold on a second, I gotta take a breathe, the sarcasm is just too thick in here. ::sigh::
Granted, if people were making money off of my work, I would be mad, but as far as I'm concerned, anime companies are getting free publicity out the wazoo. God only knows how many sales have sparked from the thousands upon thousands of music videos.
Heh, I actually wouldn't be suprised if that guy who was seen playing Milberry's "Try" video actually went out of bought Serial Experiment Lain at a local store.
Hehe, this kinda reminds me of the South Park episode where the kids learn about pirating MP3s and the Celebrities are only semi-rich as opposed to rich. ::snicker::
Point: None of us (hopefully....0_0) are making money off of these companies, but in turn are more than likely sparking sales for these companies. I forget who said this, but I think its something like "Let them eat cake". Except for the whole eating part....and the cake.....
::shrug:: My video + public showing = awesome sweet. Your video + public showing = jazztacular. No money made or loss. w00t!
Now for them cheese slappings.....

I hope you guy didn't take my comments the wrong way. I only meant to open some eyes to see that isn't (and never will be) one sided. That's all.

Other AMV sighting- I saw AtomX's "Gravity of Love" vid w/ FF VIII playing on several screens in a nightclub. There were a couple of others shown that I didn't recognize. I talked to the girl who was running all the lighting and visuals at the club and she said she was an AMV fan, had a couple dvd's w/amv's on them and liked to put them on screen some nights.
