You could go for Gatekeepers 21. That's REALLY serious unlike its counterpart.

Sakura Diaries (Romantic Drama thingy, tis not bad, kinda weird but not bad)

Hmm that's all I can think of, my anime collection features a lot of fantasy because that's my preferred genre....good luck at finding something.

Fruits Basket is really cute--contemporary setting, but some magical elements. It has serious bits in it, though generally it'd probably be termed a romantic comedy.

Oh, and I think DBZ is technically set in the contemporary world... *ducks to avoid the flames*

But yeah... most of the anime I watch tends to be more fantasy of some sort... Shaman King, for example, is set in the modern world but it's about shamans and tends to be humerous rather than serious for the most part... so yeah, good luck with your search.

I don't want magic, there's a reason I hated Ramna and Abinobashi Magic Market Place (Or what ever)

Right now, I'm watching Gunslinger Girl closely, but it seems to be so much of a copy of Noir, I want to make a short 40 second video where Kirika and Henriette face off, trying to shoot each other.

I'd rather watch animes that rely on plot for their story, then magic or something.

I agree that plot-driven series are often more enjoyable than action-driven ones, but that's not to say that a series containing magic and/or scifi elements can't have a good story. For instance, Princess Tutu is rapidly becoming one of my very top favourites, not because of its fantasy, fairy-tale setting but because of its emotional and beautiful plot-driven storyline that is expertly related in a fashion similar to the master storytellers that crafted the fairy tales upon which the series is based.

I really do have to second what everyone else is saying about Boogiepop Phantom. It's a great series if you don't mind a little horror. (Someday I'm going to make a BP pointless action vid, if only to learn how to <i>make</i> a pointless action vid. Hopefully, it'll be good but won't attract 12-year-old fangirls...)

If you don't mind romantic comedies, I'd be forced to recommend Fruits Basket and Onegai Teacher (surprisingly, O. Teacher has very little sci-fi in it). Really, they do have their share of serious moments (for example, ALL of Episode 11 of Onegai Teacher)... Onegai Twins also looks good so far (even though there's a good bit of fanservice thrown in), but I don't know if it's been licensed.

Also, Spiral: Suiri no Kizuna looks like a good series so far (I've seen 6 episodes out of 26), and is NOT a romantic comedy, but I don't think it's been licensed. Modern day, no magic or fantasy or sci-fi yet, strong mystery element.

And I don't care what anyone else here says. I think FLCL has enough serious themes in it (and little enough sci-fi) that it fits your criteria. (Just be warned that it also has a lot of zany action that doesn't always make sense the first time you watch it.)

I've loved anime set in modern, current times, with serious overtones. Full Metal Panic, Patlabor, Kanon, Perfect Blue, Noir... Things set in the current time, or only just a couple years ahead. (Okay, Patlabor is set in the future year of... 1999 A.D! :O )

Most of the series out there are things like magic, steam punk fantasy, or high end sci-fi... that or they're just Lolicon aimed ecchi series. (*shudder*) Would someone care to point me in the direction of new series to watch then?

Patlabor - I know you mentioned it, but look for all of it: three movies, 7+ DVDs of the TV show, and the OAV series should be released soon.

City Hunter - 4 or 5 movies, and a lot of TV episodes (selling at pretty good prices, BTW). The live action Jackie Chan version isn't too bad, either.

Lupin III - several movies and a TV series (more than one season, I believe). "Castle of Cagliostro" is a must-see (it's by Miyazaki).

Silent Service - submarine action movie.

801 T.T.S. Airbats - romantic drama/comedy about female pilots at a Japanese airbase.

Burn Up, Burn Up W, Burn Up X - slightly risque

police stories.

You're Under Arrest - from the creator of Ah! My Goddess, Tokyo police stories...movie, OAV, TV series. See Lostboy's "Rhythm Animation" video for clips of this one.

Chance Pop Session - shojo drama about aspiring idol singers.

Princess Nine - shojo drama about aspiring baseball players.

Sukeban Deka - rough-girl & ex-con Saki takes on the local mob. This is not comedy.

Cyber City Oedo 808 - another dark action OAV: convicts set loose to do some dirty work for the cops.

The Cockpit - three World War II stories.
