Generally, videos are created from a DVD source all the way up. Sometimes, and this is a point of contension among editors, a fansub/raw source of an unlicensed anime may be acceptable.
It's not a law of nature, but this is a sort of 'code of honor' among AMVers. So, work from the very bottom with preferably a DVD source - otherwise, and especially if you take footage from other people's videos (and it's usually easy to tell, since there will be obvious edits within the footage), people will look down on you.
In fact, as someone may less-eloquently put it, taking other people's footage = death
