Bitch or butch... I'd have to say or. o_0 But seriously, I just can't see myself choosing one of those options. He's definitely not some tough rock'em sock'em guy, but neither is he as much of a cry baby and wuss as most people would like to believe. I've seen enough people crack with much less weight to have to carry on their shoulders, so I certainly can't blame Shinji for the choices he makes.
I'm a twisted kinda person.

Um...
That was the 14th Angel, Zeruel. The 16th, Armisael, was the ring of light/DNA.

I was going along with you up until then. I don't know where butch would come from either but if anything, he's more bitch. He's a damn whiner. Just because he's a child doesn't mean that is how EVERY single child would react. Kids his age have been pushed into complex and mature situations for centuries. They did not all bitch, cry and run away when they were needed most. (also how many kids on this board who are between 13-15 would like to be consider "kids" or a child, although you are, would want to?)

He also isn't amazingly complicated. He was simple cause you could predict what he would do when faced with a situation. Shinji still had a long road ahead even by the very end of the series. Things don't change that easily.

Hell, I'm 18 and I don't consider myself an adult, nor do I want to be.

UncleMilo wrote:I can't agree with the question.

Shinji is neither a bitch nor a butch.

He is a kid who lost his mother and was abandoned by his father. He was emotionally damaged and suddenly thrust into a horrible situation. Over the course of the show, he discovered how to open up... to make friends... he challeneged his own fear and confronted the things that frightened him. Like many of us, some of the lessons he learned stuck while others didn't hold and e had to learn them again.

His story is one of empowerment and overall and optimistic message.

Shinji is not a bitch... he's a child who has more thrust upon him than a child should have.

Shinji is not butch. He doesn't become some tough hombre... nor does he become some optimistic war hound screamin' "bring it on"

He just finds the courage to face himself... to face what he is and try to work with what he's got in the face of all the rest of humanity.

I think Shinji is an amazingly complicated character and his story help characterize problems in life we all face... problems of forming friendships, of developing trust and overcoming obstacles as best as you can. Learning how to find your own voice... learning how to be who you are and learning to like who you are.

Shinji is a true hero, just not a conventional one.

Exactly, I also wanted to add that the comment that was made earlier about evangelion being about giant robots and the such is rediculous, if you actually thought that the conclusion of the fight between Angels and Eva was the point of the story then you need to go back and watch the series 2 to 3 more times.

How can you make a thread asking if he is the weaker or stronger side of human when the whole story is focused tword him just being able to be himself? Of course the giant robots were part of it but it could of been anything, he could of had to be on a space ship, survived during dinasour times, ect ect, that really didnt matter at all.

Good explanation milo, bad thread :(
Of course the battle was irrelevant, and I will add that Shinji never truly faces his himself or resolves anything. He never accepts his fate as someone that other people depend on. People die because of his constant bitching, even if he did become a complete person and came to grips with his reality doesn't justify their deaths...a real hero puts others before himself, not the other way around. Through the whole series(which I did enjoy) I wanted to shake Shinji and tell him to get over it. So your mother is dead. So you are alone. So your father is a jerk. That is life!
As the great Shaka(Buddha) understood: Life is suffering, to know life is to know pain, then you die.

The question would be better stated as whether one believes that Shinji's character is a person to be annoyed with or one to be held above the normal kin.

I choose the former.
Im just going to leave that has an incredibly stupid comment by an incredibly ignorant person because im positive people already have and will continue to right giant posts trying to explain things to people with that outlook, and even though thats great they can do it, im just not one of them. If you truly believe that if you were put in shinjis shoes where your mother died and a young age, your father abandons you only to call on u years later when he NEEDS you for work, and you are told to save the world by piloting a giant robot that you have never seen and by the end of the day you can say "Well thats just life ill get over it" then you are an incredibly strong person. Fact is no one can do that and saying something like that makes me want to punch you in the face.

/vent :/

Im not going to try and act all tough and say under shinjis circumstances i would behave better or even equally to him. Of course many of the people on this forum will say that because half of my school would. but i will guarente you little to NONE of them could. I dont think you guys are putting your selves far enough into shinjis shoes in order to say you could deal with it :|
