That's not what I meant. I was talking about the very end of the episode where he actually tries to talk to her.

What are you talking about? Episode 22 is when he actually tries to reach out to an Asuka in need. Of course, Asuka being Asuka, and considering the circumstances, it blows up in his face. But at least he tried.
As I've said, I'm working on an Eva fanfic with Yuppa, in which Shinji is a little more aggressive in his socialization attempts. So I don't ruin it for anyone interested, let's just say Shinji sees through Asuka's bitchiness, and does what's necessary, regardless of the consequences.

Even if he was yelled at by Asuka, if he really had the guts, he'd stick it out, and keep Asuka company anyway.

You know what I HATE more than anything about NGE? It's that there are so many gutless stupid fucking morons who try and "interpret" it to suit their own personal failing beliefs. If anything NGE at it's worst is a metaphor for the bible, basically interpret and rewrite as you will. At it's best, well, as Sigmund said, "Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar."

:?

Have you ever heard of something we call 'subjectivity of perception'?

Rarely is a good work of art/film/literature/music/whatever interpretable in only one or two clear-cut ways, and it's even more rare for these perceptions to coincide with the original intention of the artist.

Eva, of all things, is one of the most subjective titles you can get. 'Suit their own failing beliefs'? I'm compelled to smirk at that one, since I dare anyone to come out and say they are NOT viewing the world around them through a lens of personal beliefs, bias and experiences.

I'm sorry, I don't tolerate the Mr. Objective attitude.

I think maybe you're inclined to confuse "good" with half assed. If something is half assed, it requires interpretation. If the work is TRULY good, there is no interpretation, the authors intentions are clear and concise. One needs only examine the last two episodes of NGE to fully realized just how half assed the work is.

The other problem is that half assed work gives people who aren't completely sure about what they believe in an easy means of projecting themselves and their own "stories" if you will into the work. I have seen *SO* many interpretations of NGE, but the thing about every one of those interpretations that I've read, they ALWAYS reflect aspects of the the person making them.

The interpretations that I've seen are NEVER truly reflective of what's actually there. There is a huge difference from say comparing the book Animal Farm to World War II and comparing it to your own personal feelings about your childhood pet pig. The later is what most NGE fan(atics) do. A truly GOOD piece of work CAN BE compared to things in an OBJECTIVE manner. If you're making subjective comparisons though, no, you're just using someone else's half assed work as a primer to project your feelings onto because you don't have enough imagination and understanding to do it with something original.

This just proves my point regarding the whole subjectivity issue.

I for one don't really share either the point of view regarding eva nor the notion of 'authors intentions being clear' a mark of greatness.

Although I'm not saying that Eva is pinnacle of greatness, or that Anno didn't get at times carried away by their own emotions.

But, there is room for thought there, which is what attracts me. Ambiguity attracts me a lot more than straightforwardness, which gives Eva large bonus points in my department.

That and the fact that I don't believe that art is 'created' or the fact that the author's message should even have anything to do with its' interpretation by others.

But to note: I can perfectly accept your stance on Eva is a valid one. I'm not arguing you're wrong in your view of that, just saying that I don't believe there's anything in there that should be objective.
