How can you give them credit for that? All they had to do was animate some menus, author the disks, and sell them to the peons. :\Anime Jedi wrote:As well as ReBoot, and Shadow Raiders as non anime, I've got to give them some credit...
Damn you ADV!

I'm gonna have to say I know two dubbing jobs that really impressed me by ADV . . . and that would be Those Who Hunt Elves and Master of Mosquiton. Generator Gawl was pretty good, too. ^_^ But yeah, a lot of their stuff sucks. Stupid Excel.

Britt: The worst! I was aiming at the horse.

Ah guys, the DVD companies don't do the dub. A group translates it, dubs it, and then sells it to Bandai, ADV, or whoever. Plus, DUBBING SUCKS! Either way, on any DVD the dub will be horrid, I have yet to see a good dub, on Bandai or ADV (I should know, my younger bro and sis insist on dub
). In Canada, an ADV DVD will cost me about $40, a Bandai $40-60! Manga $20-30 (There the only ones I buy, but they only really have movies, very few series).
I rent lots of anime DVDs though, and while I like the bandai DVDs more, I rent a lot of ADV, and since I never watch the dub, it's all good. Plus on most ADV dvds you go to the extra features to check the trailers, I've only seen ONE where they all play at the start, and I just had to hit menu to bypass it.

no i don't remember that dub ... i bought it and used the japanese audio track with the english subs ... they're there for a reason. Safe gaurd against shitty dubs rurining a good series.DJ_Izumi wrote:ADV attempting to translate Japanese humor. Lets all remember the Nadesico dub.
However what upsets me is that AD will probably find it's way on TV where the dub will be whored around like it always is. Do for tha treason i hope they do a good job.

Shows what you know. The larger release companies have their own voice actor pools, this is why you can hear many of the same voices in different roles in ADV dubs. Such as using Spike Spencer as both Shinji from Eva and Akito from Nadesico, I've heard many, MANY voices recycled threw out ADV dubs. I actually lost money betting that ADV would recycle the voice actress used for Rei as Kirika from Noir.
You're thinking of the older releases, such as how Canada's 'Nelvana' animation dubbed Card Captor Sakura but Bandai released it to DVD, Nelvana was the company that sold CCS to American television networks still. (You can hear much of the CCS dubbed cast in the Canadian cartoon show 'What about Mimi?') DiC did the same with Sailor Moon, DiC dubbed it and sold it abroad, ADV bought it to sell on DVD. Ironicly enough, the english voice actress for 'Chibi-usa' was a personality for between shows a Canadian youth television channel... Frightningly enough, she always talks like that, it's her natural voice. :X

Yes, but you will also here some fo those voices in other dubs (Gundam Wing for instance, a bandai product, voice actors are in many ADV productions). The translations groups sell there stuff (Or buy from) companies like Bandai and ADV, but they don't sell exclusivly. I'll try and get some proof on this, I know this was the case six months ago, enless things have changed since then.....

You now have a DVD quality version of those episodes. With subtitles. And dub if you really want that. Do you have a right to bitch? Sure. Do you have reason to bitch? I don't think so. Companies like ADV do their best to bring you the best anime at high quality with good prices, and you dare complain? What the hell is your problem? I remember when anime came on VHS, sub or dub, you couldn't get both at once. And extras? On a VHS tape? Forget it. They didn't exist. And you have the balls to bitch and moan about how you think it's a ripoff? Fuck off.
And another thing. I don't know if anyone's noticed, but ADV... the ever hated for some reason ADV.. is bringing over great titles, doing a damn fine job if you ask me, and they actually care about the fans. They listen to us. They give us what we want. Do you honestly think that Azumanga Daioh would have gotten liscensed if fans hadn't demanded it so profusely? And who picked up that liscense, which is destined to only sell to a niche crowd?
ADV. The constantly dissed ADV. The always doing their best and trying to provide you with the best entertainment quality in anime ADV.
You don't wanna watch their ads and trailers before the damn menu? Oh well. Companies are actually kind of hurting with that one. You can skip their ads on DVDs most of the time. At least on VHS, you had to fast forward and see a blurry fast version of the ads. You couldn't just skip ahead. ADV is a commercial company, so they obviously want to make sure people see their ads. Mind you, putting the ads on before the manu without the option of skipping might not be the best route, but hey... if you don't like it, send ADV some mail and let them know that you don't like that. If enough people don't like it, they'll probably change things to stay in the fans' favor.
And before you say I sound like I'm trying to advertise for ADV here, I'm not really. I'd stick up for any company bringing anime over here on DVD. I'd stick up for any company that's getting dogged on for no good reason if they don't deserve it.
And quite frankly, ADV doesn't deserve it.
They make their mistakes... sitting on liscenses is a bad habit of theirs, and their releases can be slow sometimes, but it seems like they are trying to get over that. So give them a chance, please. They're doing their best. Remember, anime is not the biggest industry to be in in America right now. It's just now starting to expand to mainstream. I bet ADV makes a lot less profit than you might think from anime. They probably make more money off their liscense of "Farscape" than they do off most of their anime titles.
Be thankful these companies exist, that's all I gotta say. Cuz otherwise, we'd be stuck with just fansubs... and not all fansubs are that great. And fansubs don't usually have extras. and fansubs aren't DVD quality 99% of the time. Fansubs are nice, but DVD is so much better.
OK I know I'm on a rant. I'll stop for now.
