Videos of mine that have won at cons have a low ratings... I don't get it myself, so I've learned to ignore it...

Everyone is not the same as you.
Get over it.
And lighten up.

That reminds me of a sig long long ago in a galaxy far far away....

Anyways, my star ratings hover around the 3.5-4 mark for most of my vids. But to be honest they fluctuate so much that I think having the system be anonymous might not be the best way to go, I've seen a vid plummet .7 stars in one day before and that was only with 3 new people starring it after it already had about 70, all 1's perhaps?
The best effects are the ones you don't notice.

Star Scale sucks because people suck.
I have no idea how to use this new forum.

Yes, but people who give the same scores consistently should be recieving a nice little email explaining that their votes will not be counted until they clean up their act (this was explained either in Site Suggestions or Announcements). So if he does it enough eventually all his scores will be discredited - so it won't matter.

As for the topic - my vids range from 3.2 to 3.8, with one exception being my 'mistake' vid which comes in at a sad little 2.88.

I've noticed that slow vids tend to rank lower, as well as multi-anime vids - and these scores are direct opposites of the opinion ratings. The same is true for the other side of it - my action vids tend to have lower 'opinion' scores but higher star scores. I take this to mean the average viewer (those who don't have the time or care to leave constructive reviews) enjoys the fast vids and vids that focus on single anime/stories. And vids for rare anime/pairings tend to have lower scores regardless of the pace - which could mean viewers had no attachment to the vid (not something that appeals to the general public).

The reason I give my thoughts is to explain the low star ratings for some of the con vids people have mentioned. In a room full of amv enthusiasts (and ones who are familiar enough with the anime/theme to vote the vid a winner) the amvs do well. But when you give it to the average org viewer they may not like it as well. It's not the vid, it's the audience.

At the same time, those emotional "I put my soul into this" vids probably don't appeal as well to the average viewer, so you can expect a lower star rating than an easy to watch and appreciate action/fun vid would get you.

The exceptions, of course, are the ones that appeal to any viewer - the ones that sit at the top of the star scale with hundreds of votes. Considering the average 'good' editors sit between the 3rd and 5th pages (and further on) it's nothing to worry about. This is a wide audience here - with the forced star ratings. And few vids will please them all. ^_^;

Yes Ari, but that doesn't stop some people from giving certain people 1s on every video they make. Even if they rate every other video somewhat fairly. That way, their scores are spread out but they can lower the scores of at least one person's vids. :?

I know some people that do that.
Kusoyaro: We don't need a leader. We need to SHUT UP. Make what you want to make, don't make you what you don't want to make. If neither of those applies to you, then you need to SHUT UP MORE.

True. :?

It makes me wonder if Phade could use something that would consider the stars given to a single editor. The current system looks at the standard deviation of all scores, so a little tweaking could catch these things if a person were to give the same score to every vid by the same person.

But then again, it would be hard to do since you may give all 5s to a great editor. A look at deviation would count that as bad as giving all 1s.

So there's not much you can do about it - just wait for the rest to even the scores out. >.<

As was stated further above: You gotta go in, make that AMV because -YOU- love it. Then you can give it away to your friends and the world, here & elsewhere. If the average passer-by doesn't 'get it,' welll frankly that's his loss, not yours.

It's unfortunate that there are some people who 'have it in for' specific creators and seek to ALWAYS plonk every one of that creator's works.

Another thing to consider is that maybe your personal 'culture' is a minority within the population of a-m-v.org members. Take the average of what the whole membership thinks is funny, exciting, boring, the kind of music and the series that the average member loves, can't stand etc. -- and roll it all up. Now compare your likes & dislikes, tastes, sense of humor, what you find inspiring, worthy of attention, respect, etc. to that aggregate 'dude.'

If your particulars are more remote from that statistical average, the crowd mostly isn't gonna 'get' your AMV. You aspire to things they have no clue about, and vice-versa. To mangle a cliche, it's that old 'march to a different accordion' thing.

But, let's say that out of umpteen tens of thousands of members, 20 people get your inside joke, your obscure yet profound reference, or enjoy the sound track you selected, or watched the series that most other members blew off ... then you still moved 20 people, and you reached to them from where they stand. And that's something the umpteen tens of thousands cannot erase.

No one seems to understand WHY the star ratings don't work, so here let me point it out for everyone's benefit.

*Person X downloads a local video*

*Person X downloads another local video*

*Person X keeps on downloading local video until, aww fuck, what's this?*

*Person X is unexpectedly brought to this 'JoO mus giva teh stars, yo!'*

*Person X sighs and says, "Bother."*

*Person X looks through the list of stuff they've downloaded, can't remember most of it just by the titles, is in a hurry, just wants to be able to download the video they just clicked the link for, randomly goes through and tries to give semi accurately ratings on the fly without really giving it too much thought or reason*

*Star ratings wind up being a poor reflection of how good a video actually is*

Tres simple, non?
