DVD Resolution Limit

Post by DJ_Izumi » Sun Nov 02, 2003 2:14 pm

As most of you should know, DVD's are most commonly encoded to a D1 resolution of 720x480, however as fewer of you know DVD standard supports alternate resolutions without issue... they are as fallows. (I speak of NTSC only, not PAL)

720 x 480 pixels
704 x 480 pixels
352 x 480 pixels
352 x 240 pixels

I recently aquired a DVD ripped OVA (Fansub, eat me) of Kanon: Kaza Hana, it is encoded to 800x600 as divx. This is where it seems odd. This rip is sharp as a monkey, meaning the source of this rip had to have been higher then 720x480.

Is there a higher resolution for DVD WG1 standard that is highly unused that I don't know about?

:\ Toss 480 x 480 pixils in that list too.

800x600 isn't a lot bigger than 720x480. My guess would be that they scaled it up from a standard DVD resolution, and possibly applied some kind of filter to make it look sharper. That kind of thing can be quite convincing.

Not really - there are limitations of "explicit sexual activity" and "for a sexual purpose". Sailor Moon removing her clothes to transform probably doesn't qualify. But just wait until the currently-proposed changes pass Parliament and it becomes illegal to possess descriptions of activities that "would be" illegal. You'll have to throw out all your old Star Trek: Voyager tapes, because Kes is way under 18...

This isn't scaled up, I have another rip by another sub group, they did the file at 768x432 (widescreen) agian larger then DVD resolutions. We all know that typical sharpening filters that utalize general convolution accomplish little. I also doubt that two different groups spontaniously decided the up the resolution with filters on an obscure panty-shot-less shoujo anime single episode OVA release.

Whatever their source disk, it was higher then 720x480 (And remember, 720x480 needs to be rescaled to 640x480 for PC playback otherwise the aspect ratio is incorrect.)

No, 2/3 D1 isn't officially supported.
Maybe they went into the future and used HD-DVD.

Looks like they used a HDTV-Source. It's a pretty common standard in Japan...

I suppose you wen't listining then... I said OVA. OVA's are released directly to video, not broadcast across televison, so it couldn't have been a 1080p24 HDTV signal. :\

Well, I can tell you that this would certainly apply to the 768x432 version, as having seen it, I can tell that the encoder obviously didn't have a clue what he was doing. Dunno about the other version, but it's probably not much of a stretch to say that he was just dumb as well.
