AMD versus Intel

Post by SephirothJenova » Sun Nov 02, 2003 1:23 am

I was reading the new article from PCWorld.com about the new AMD64 chips that they just developed. I know that the new chips aren't yet available to the public, but I really wanted to know what is better overall. I read that they tested a the new chip versus an AMD Athlon 3200+ and a P4 3.1GHz CPU. I'm really wondering for the new computer I'm buying (I know I've been saying that for months, but my dad really let me get the okay on this one) which CPU is better and why?

eh? They're out :\

I would recomend a dual AMD setup. Most bang for the buck.

this has nothing to do with hardware setup for video editing.

Alas. it all comes down to personal preference. AMD is typically the cheaper of the 2. I've been using AMD since the K6-2 was out, and I swear by them. Others will swear by Intel.

Benchmarks will always show that AMD gives you more bang at lower speeds than intel's higher end processors, but may cost a bit more. It's always been said that AMD is geared towards gamers with it's ultimately superior math processing power, and Intel makes Multimedia chips.

And unless you know how to use it, or have programs to take advantage of dual processors, it's really a waste of money.

AMD all the way, but not for any real hardcore reason. I just like the lower prices 8) .
I'm out...

Amd. Premeire's code is not optimized for the pentiums so rendering will be much faster/dollar spent. Plus they're cheaper.

According to benchmarks done by Comp Cames Magazine:

The Pentium 4s score higher on the synthetic benchmarks, but these exist almost entirely in cache.

The Athlons do better with office type programs, like excel and word.

The Pentium 4 was slightly faster running Photoshop 7 filiters, but Quicktime ran faster on the FX-51, so media creation is still slightly faster on the Pentiums.

On gaming there is a 5-15% boost in performance depending on how the benchmarks are performed.

Although the 64 bit version of Windows isn't slated to come out until later this year or early next.

Also this chip won't fit in any current motherboards, so you'll have to pick a new one up.
