Yes, this is surly a crime agianst the nature of DVD. I am encoding Mpeg files to turn Divx Fansubs into XSVCD video disks for archival purposes, and so I'll never have to buy the retail products (I even add menus.

)

So, the TMPGEnc settings are as fallows

Mpeg-2 Video
24fps (With pulldown on playback)
352x480
1500kbit Variable Bit Rate (3000max/750min)

Mpeg-1 Audio
48000khz
Layer III (MP3)
128kbit

We're buying a new DVD player next week and I tend to have higher then normal requirements. If the player can play this disk in the store, it'll play anything else I throw at it. Unless the disk breaks it. ^^;

Those settings would yield some pretty crappy results. :X

180mins of video on a CD using mpeg? That sounds soooooo unwatchable unless you used about 9 passes with VBR. :\

I know it doesnt sound good, but I ripped and burned Final Destionation 2 using those settings, and in my one DVD player that will play it the quailty is almost perfect. Granted the results may not be as good on some movies, but I will tell you what, it shocked the hell out of me!

They say it has somthing to do with the custom GOP structure and Quantization Matrix... I don't know.

Anyway, give it a shot and see, I bet you will be surprised.

Well of course, The standard for SVCDs uses MP2 audio, that's a 2 layer Mpeg1 audio stream, MP3 is just 3 layers.

Since the dvd player has mp3CD support, MP3 has to be in it's audio decoding functions, and so the player will decode the MP3 steam without issue.

If the DVD player has decent programming that is, hence the test.

Quite true. If I remember right my new Samsung will not play MP3 streams on SVCD's, but my old KLH player will, go figure.

In theory.

In practice a lot of software players blow up when using MP3 audio in an MPEG1 or MPEG2 container.

Hardware players tend to do the same thing -- even more so, since the amount of deviation they can tolerate is generally much lower than a software player.

You can certainly try MPEG layer III audio in an MPEG-2 program stream, but if it doesn't work on your player, don't be surprised.

I had (parents) a RCA player that took the MP3-SVCDs, so I'm shopping for hopefully find the exact same model.
