I figured "since we here are always working w/dvd drives", what do you think of this dvd drive. I might buy one (they are really really cheap), but want to know what you think first here is the specs (it is a Lieton LDW-401S):

Get the Pioneer DVR-A06/106...4x dual-format DVD+R/RW / DVD-R/RW drive...16x CD-R, I believe something like 10 or 12x CD-RW...

From the reviews I was reading, the 401S is only a +R burner, which struck it from my shortlist of burners that I'm looking at buying sometime in the next week. (I'm only looking at dual-format burners).

Lite-On manufactures a dual-format burner, the 411S, though it's apparently having problems writing to cheaper -R media, though the upcoming firmware upgrade is supposed to fix that. I'll wait to find out if it does.

Meanwhile, the two major drives I've been trying to decide between are the Sony DRU-510A (DV-U14A) and the Pioneer A06 (106). They're virtually identical drives, both with reputable companies backing them up, with very similar prices (~$160).

I just wasn't sure of how good it is @ burning dvd's. I am tired of using my friends comp. to burn dvd's off, and this caught my attention.

Yes, it burns +R and +RW. What I meant is that it won't burn -R or -RW (or -RAM, but then most drives won't).

o.O i see what you mean. Hmm.... I may go with it, going down there saturday to see how long this deal lasts.... will search for a better price for a DVD burning drive in the meantime.

I skimmed through several parts of this post, but I must advocate in favor of the Pioneer A06 (or is OEM counterpart, the 106). I have the Pioneer 106, and it's a fantastic drive. It's fast, it's reliable, it's compatible. At only around $150, the 106 is an excellent buy.

I'd recommend against buying generic or less-known drives, and I'd advocate against getting a +R-only drive. DVD burning technology is not foolproof enough to trust every type of media in every drive, but the name-branded drives more reliably read and write different brands of media. +R, while, offering several nice features, is less compatible with -R, os if you want +R support you're better off purchasing a +- drive.

um, i forgot what the hell its called but theirs some dvdr drive out their that can actualy use a blank dvdr (or rw) disk just like a hdd. that means taht yuo could even install stuff on it as shit. this would not jsut be cool, but if you have some game like quake 3, and have thousands of maps, nodels, mods and whatever els, then it would be useful. oh and, it also writes at 40Mbps , which is nice and speedy
