The #1 fear Americans have is.....

Post by angelx03 » Tue Oct 28, 2003 8:57 pm

public speaking.

This is one of the fears I get ALL the time. Heck in a few weeks, I have to do an oral presentation on a topic related to Jarhead for Writing and Literature I. That INCLUDES 5 min. Q & A session. :cry:

So is public speaking one of your worst fear?

I'm more afraid of heights than of public speaking. :? I'm not really afraid of public speaking at all.

I love how public speaking is #1 and death is #2. So basically this nation is saying that at a funeral they'd rather be the guy in the coffin than the priest who has to bless him.
The best effects are the ones you don't notice.

If you're dead you don't have to worry about what people think of you. :?

I'm not afraid of public speaking, so long as I can take however long I want, and there doesn't have to be a structure. My mind naturally rambles, but it does it in such a way, that if I talk about a subject I know about just off the fly, it comes out about as well as a prepared public speech.

It's just when I'm forced to organize everything into a few minutes (when there's usually too many important topics to cover in that short of a time), and I have to approach it in a specific way, that I can't keep things straight in my head.

I remember for some of my best presentations in high school, I did the best ones with some general ideas of what I wanted, and just went for it when it was most convenient. For example, I gave this presentation on the Vikings for a King Arthur segment of my English Litterature class (the Vikings were the only interesting people or subject that occured during the time of King Arthur-around 500-800 A.D.).

For the speech, I explained the Viking strategy for warfare. I made a few crappy shields out of paper plates, got about five volunteers from the class, and made them perform shield formations. Then, just for added amusement, I made them pillage and loot the class, in the typical Berserker fashion. It was quite effective.

I used to hate public speaking. I would choke up and everything. Nowadays I am better but sometimes I still ramble and get the jitters.

I must say I hate heights and spiders the most though. (funny story though, I hate heights but my nickname is Spider-man because I can climb like crazy, scaling walls in seconds. But once I reach the top I freak out.)
