That's exactly what happened too. The samurai represents Lee's inner demons and Lee knew he had to defeat him in order for his children to be safe. I love that movie.
At the end of Dragon (one of my all-time favorite movies, it's not a kung-fu movie but it rawks), they said the cause of his death is unknown to this day... but I think that was just to add to the mystery of Lee that the movie makes.
