Serious AMV query

Post by Mr Pilkington » Fri Oct 10, 2003 9:27 pm

How would you, as an AMV creator feel if you found out that people were publicly displaying your works without even a single thought for consideration or editor approval? I don’t mean small things like a group of friends over at someone’s house, I am referring to real public events. Lets say for instance a 200-300 person LAN party at a local arena. Especially for an editor such as Vlad who will put hundreds of hours of work into just one video, to then have it taken and displayed without consent!

I know my thoughts on the subject, but I would like to hear yours.

I don't really know, I guess it would bother me. but in a way i would kind of like it. Most of my vids have bumbers that give my email address and othe info about me so i would kind of look at it like free pub. now my best work that i have made doesn't have a bumper so if that one got played, yeah it would piss me off, cause i wouldn't get any credit. I guess as long as my contact info and my name is in the tile i don't care.

I'd be appreciative, as long as no one else was claiming credit for them.

Here are my thoughts. This is a personal thing, IMO, so I don't expect anyone to have to conform to this. Everyone feels a different way.

If I release a video to the public, I mean for it to be viewed (and hopefully enjoyed) by others. I would like it if I knew who was watching, just out of curiosity, but we don't have that as it is - we don't get names on downloads, unless people op a video. So it would be nice if people asked, but I wouldn't get pissy about just that. I mean, it's essentially thrown into the public anyway by having a non-passworded download link. There's not much difference to me between 200 people downloading a vid, and 200 people seeing it on a screen.

As long as nobody takes credit for my work (underline, big type, surround with stars, marquee, and annoying sound effect) then I consider this a good thing.

I'm the simple type who just likes making and sharing vids. I'm in it to have fun and trade with other people. So that's my take.

...or what Nailz said in about 1/100th the words. ;) (Too fast for me. I thought nobody would say the same thing, so.)

Yep, as long as they don't cut the bumpers off, it's all good with me. I admit to making them for others to see, as well as for myself.

As long as my studio's name, website and email address show up at the end like they're supposed to, I wouldn't really mind. I mean, I make these things to be watched.

I guess I'll post my thoughts.

Me personally, I wouldn't be totally pissed. But disappointed, yes. I kind of feel as a member of a community that others should simply ask permission. It takes 2 seconds to type a nice post requesting videos for public display; yes I'm glad people like them, maybe it's just me, but since take so much time and consideration entering you, it's a matter of respect for the art to simply request permission. Besides I don't known and editor one that would turn down a logical request from a fan. Just my 2¢

I don't see a reason to be angry if people decide to exhibit your work. I mean, I certainly wouldn't care if my videos were displayed at cons, regardless if I knew about it or not. It's not I have anything to lose from their screening.

It would be nice to know about it after the fact, of course, so that I can take sadistic pleasure in the immense pain that the exhibitors must have subjected their audience to.
