I used Ulead once, but that was some time ago so I'm not sure of what it has now. Animation Shop is pretty sweet though in that it can export back and forth real easy into Paint Shop, plus it has a lot of built in effects filters. Like on my main site www.backwater-productions.net I used the underwater effect to make the animated logo. It also has a nifty wizard thing for optimizing and compressing the gif. Like on Farmboybob's avatar, it was 5.11kb, but after I edited it in Animation Shop it managed to reduce it to 1.29kb.

It's also pretty much a must if you want to do really nifty lip synching effects in AMVs, mainly because of the way it can open an AVI file, merge identical frames, and then show the durations of each frame. The process is a lil on the complicated side, but it works real nice for head motion and background motion lip synching (also never underestimate the power of green screens when makin yer AMVs). I've been thinking about making a lip synching guide here at some point when I get some free time. I gots a lot of stuff I need to finish first though.

Jasc Animation Shop, yes that's what I use. Avatars and the amvs alike.

flash, photoshop, paint, director, premiere and selteco bannershop work real good.
