How consistent is your editing style?

Post by Zarxrax » Sat Oct 04, 2003 4:32 pm

Let's say you edit an amv, and when you get to the first chorus, you edit it it with fades. Now lets say you get to the 2nd chorus. The music sounds the same. Would you choose to edit this chorus with fades as well, or might you try something different this time, maybe straight cuts?

Basically what I'm getting at, is do you keep your editing style very consistent and within the same video, after you have devised the first part, basically go by a formula for the rest of it. Or do you try to keep mixing things up? Would you say either method is less appropriate, or even wrong to do?

See for yourself? ......

It's somewhat consistent, but there is a big change in the music from the first quarter to the other three quarters.

I try to remain pretty consistent with my editing style. Most of time, everything is lyric based, so I just follow the formula of displaying scenes that I normally use with a fade or cross dissolve thrown in every once in awhile.

It all depends on you I think...

Say you like a certain effect... [*cough Tapestry Illusion *cough*] I see nothing wrong with seeing the same effect throughout a video so long as it "moves with the music" and isn't just "blah, it's lookin' good".

If you want to mix it up, hey, that's fine too... ^_^

But sometimes, if u do decide to mix up, you can end up with a mess. Other times, a person is doing the same thing over and over again and hides it really freakin' well... [Euphoria *cough*]

Again, it's all up to you ^_^

Since I don't worry about lyrics, I find whatever scene I think matches the mood. I've been using alot of fades lately to transition from scene to scene but some videos I just use straight cuts.

It depends for me, if its anything but a random action vid, then I switch up the style a bunch, but if its a random action vid it stays pretty constant.
The best effects are the ones you don't notice.

I usually mix up my editing, and it ends up looking like crap.

I'm not a very consistent person..

I'm pretty consistent transitions-wise, but not with effects. To me, an effect slowly loses its novelty each subsequent time after its first use in the video (unless it's not a very obvious one). There's a line between consistency and overuse.

It depends on the song and the footage. If I'm doing a vid with a lot of action scenes and a lot of slow scenes mixed together I have to pick 'one' way to present the action and one for the slow - otherwise it gets really messy and just odd (though being consistent and boring isn't really much of an improvement).

I've done a few where I jumped around and kept things different, but that was mostly 'fun/comedy' or random action. With a drama vid I like to keep the editing unobtrusive - meaning consistent (boring) so the focus is on the scenes (the anime) and not the transitions.

:? I'd say I average 'boring' consistent more than anything. Is that good? Probably not according to general oppinion, but I like it in the ones I watch and I use it in my own.

My style is probably far from consistent... and that's just in a single video. I am usually all over the place... I go with what fits the music/footage/mood ... oh and my own mood affects the outcome of a single edit.

I don't think either method is wrong at all... I think the big downfall of a video is the potential to spoil the viewer with wonderful editing ... and then crap out ... or the other way around... start weak and end strong... (though the strong end is the better of these two)

One of the great things an editor can abuse is when something really works well, you can shovel garbage at the viewer just after it because they'll still be in such awe.
