Rutgers is a place I can definitely get into, because both of my brothers graduated there. I do live in Missouri (St. Louis area), so the state universities around here (Mizzou and Rolla) are my for sure bets. I know that VegettoEX is in Rutgers and it'd be cool to move back to the east, but I'm also looking for the best education. I like to learn, so professors and the learning environment is very important to me. But I'm not a total bookworm, so a place with girls and some partying is good too. Any suggestions on that? Remember that I'm probably going to go into Engineering, mathematics, or physics.
I don't really want to get a Civil Engineering degree, because I have no love for making bridges, houses, developing cities or towns. I was considering Computer Engineering, but it's very overflooded with Indians (strangely enough I am an Indian) (also Indians are from India, not Native Americans). I'd also like to keep my computer hobbies separate from my work, so that I can still enjoy doing things on the computer. Mainly its Electrical Engineering now. If I go into Physics or Mathematics I'll probably end up a teacher, and eventually get my PhD in it, but they don't make as much as an engineer would, so I'm still not sure. Either way NOTHING MEDICAL OR ENGLISH!

That's quite true. MeriC graduated this year, Mike/VegettoEx will next year and you go there as well.FirestormXIII wrote:Come to Rutgers, plenty of us great AMV makers go/went there
I think my alma mater just has me...sucks for them

I figure I tell you that there is no such thing as a computer engineer degree. When people say they are a computer engineer there are more than likely a dual Major of CS and EE.
So basicly you can not get a major in Computer engineering. You would have to get a major in EE and computer science (hince the dual major)
I can speak for Texas tech from what I seen on it so far and what I have learn (first semester here)
About tech
Girl are pretty hot
The campus is huge (2nd largest in that nation. only the airforce campus is larger because they have runways)
Teacher have an open door policy
Teacher are very student orintated (very important)
Only thing that sucks is the campus is huge and some time the place i want to go is a long walk away.
The class size for most of my classes is under 100. Math class are kept under 40. Labs are about 30. The teachers are very helpful and htey will help you out if you ask. Unlike most collages tech does not have wash-out class. I willing ot bet money that MIT and Purdue try wash out a lot of students. I believe MU may have some 2. Would not surpises me.
When you look at the collage try to find out how much there degrees in that feild are worth. I know an engineering degree from Tech is a very good in the market (as with MIT, Purdue.) I also know MU is having massive problems with housing and they tend to have extramly large class sizes (They did when my mom wenter htere over 25+years ago so it prouble only gotten worse not better)
Also CE stands for civil engineering. Took me a second to figure what you where trying to say. If you put CE on an ap they will thinkg you are applying for Civil Engineering. Speaking of CE I have to get to my engineer anl class

Not quite true. It really depends on the college. For example, my college(Carnegie Mellon) has an Electrical Computer Engineering major, and a Computer Science Major, but no Electrical Engineering Major. So pretty much the ECE major winds up being a combination of people who want to do EE, and CE.Timelessblurr wrote:I figure I tell you that there is no such thing as a computer engineer degree. Well basicly what a EE is now is a electrical Computer engineering. So it breaks down to them being a EE.BogoSort wrote:Not quite true. It really depends on the college. Also CE does not stand for Computer Engineering. It stands for Civil Engineering. It gets very confusing.
In the bussince world and EE is basicly a computer engineer give or take. You tell them you want ot be a comptuer engineering they going ot duel major you

Here's the thing RIT uses when distinguishing between civil engineering and computer engineering. They use CET which stands for civil engineering technology, and they use CpET for computer engineering technology. Simple, right?Timelessblurr wrote:

yeah that sound about right. I seen both though actnems before. It removes all confusiong from the issues. I know at job fares if you put CE on you name tag they will think are are a civil engineering.
I think we high jack this topic so back to the point Are you trying to stay instate or go out of state because staying instate is a lot cheaper.
I also know every collage right now is running into a massive bugget crisses. The states have all cut funding and bussiness have pulled out a lot of money they pay collages for researchs (plus the donashtion went down ect.)

Money really isn't a huge thing. I'm going to have to take student loans either way, unless my brothers pay for it (one will be a doctor next year and my other brother is a pharmacist), but I doubt they will help me out any. I know that I can definitely get into the state colleges. Out of state is tricky, so I want to know which ones are the best ones overall (having fun and learning, although learning is more important to me).

I wholeheartedly disagree with this ignorant and mis-informed comment.Timelessblurr wrote:I figure I tell you that there is no such thing as a computer engineer degree. When people say they are a computer engineer there are more than likely a dual Major of CS and EE.

First, as Bogosort has already noted, every college is different.
More importantly though, Computer Engineering is a major that is widely accepted within all industries and there IS a distinction made when applying for positions. I should know since I'm a Computer Engineer at AMD.
-Electrical Engineer - Deals with things like robotics, signal processing (analog or digital), Control Systems, Circuits (duh), etc.
-Computer Engineer - Deals with computer systems whether designing, verifying or implementing. These can range from a typical desktop Computer Processor or a Processor within a satellite. Mainly resides in the digital domain.
-Computer Science - One could easily say "they code things," but that's fairly ignorant since Computer science can really be just that...a science where they reserach and develop algorithms as well as code.
You can easily see that:
Comp. Eng != Computer Science + Electrical Engineer
I'm a Computer Engineer and know jack shit about CS. I mean I can code, but I'm not that good. I do have a CS minor, but we all know minors are a joke anyway.
I will however state that yes Computer Engineers do have a mixture of Computer Science and Electrical Engineering, but at the same time, it's ignorant to say they're the same thing or just a combination of those two. That would imply mastery of both and that is hardly the case. On top of that, Computer Engineers usually specialize in things like Implementation (Logic Design) and writing RTL (hardware language). These are not covered in either EE or CS and thus a combination is still incorrect. Just like how Comp. E's might not know that much about Control Systems.
As for my specific university, we split CS and EE and Comp. E. CS is within it's own major and EE and Comp. E is under "ECE" (Electrical and Computer Engineering. I believe Purdue and Univ. of Texas do this as well). Don't look at it the wrong way though, they are seperate degrees come graduation and only share classes for the first two years (like I said Comp. E's DO know SOME EE stuff). I might also add that technically I am an Electrical Engineer by degree, but instead of going down the paths mentioned above, I took all Computer Architecture and Engineering courses and thus have a proficiency in that area and was hired at a Computer Company.
Anyway, I guess I should stop since this is too long and convoluted.
