Ogg container

I know i can't be the first person to come accross this and it wasn't the first time i had bumpted into it. I just wanted to see what everyones take on this was. Apparently there is a now an ogg container that you can stuff avi's into and use ogg as the audio source. Apparently there was problems putting ogg into avi containers. He also uses some sort of subtitle filter that allows the toggling on and off of subtitles somehow. I keep on hearing ppl talk about how Ogg is better than MP3 at certain bitrates and I understand that Ogg isn't supported by as many stand alone players, but is this a trend that we might start seeing more of? I am curious of the merit of this idea and would like to heard more about what other ppl think about it.

OGM is pretty old, and since no one really uses it and its been out so long, I doubt it will ever catch on. Matroska is the one to keep an eye out for, its way better than OGM

AVI's are merged into the OGG cantainer, then the sub titles, then the Audios.

that is not an option at the encode; the media player will have that setting in your View location

no trend and MP3 sounds better

I am curious of the any real merit of this idea and would like to heard more about what other ppl think about it on this subject.

OGG has its own "Direct Show" process which will over-ride MicroSoft's DirectX.
- .oga ( audio ) .ogm ( multi-Audio and a Video and multi-Subtitles )

This cantainer can bring everything back to everything RAW "only"
(( this means, if you want the Video, no Audio will come with it! ))

As for its popularity, its not very popular!
( as for AMVers, it's fantastic because the Video is RAW and YOU add the Subbing OVER the Video instead of it being part of the Video itself ^^ )

? are there draw-backs to this design ?

OGG was a simple solution to Multi Audio's and Multi Sub's ONLY.

you see, it had never bee tryed before ( to make an all-in-one DVD clip. )

A: The Container is OGG, everything else is added to the Container. ( Piriod )
- that's OGG in a nut-shell.

to date, only h-b has attempted a 14 language sub and it worked ^^

Anyway, Ogm is just a direct show hack of the ogg audio container spec created by xiph for their patent-free vorbis codec. Ogm (= ogg) lets you mux avi and vorbis audio plus srt subtitles. The advantage to this is that vorbis is better than mp3, the subtitles are contained directly in the file, and you can store chapter points.

However, as Matroska matures, ogm will have seen it's last days as it really cannot compare. Both are obscure container formats, but matroska is far better planned and far more functional. If you need and/or want something that cannot be supplied by the Mp4, RM, or WMV containers, MKV is the container for you. These four are going to be the primary containers over the next few years, one because of the standard, two because of the companies backing them, and the last because of it's pure extensibility and perfection (aka opensource

).
Ogg may make a comeback in some form in the future when Theora and eventually Tarkin, xiph's patent-free open video codecs, are completed.

Q: can you extract the Video from a .mk file ? if so, I'll switch `right now ^^

What do you mean, "extract"?
The mkv files I have seen and made so far, it is possible to extract an avi out of them. With certain features and stuff though, it may not be possible. Is this what you are asking?
