Hi all. Since I'm stepping down from my duties as Otakon AMV Staff -- I've been the Coordinator or Co-coordinator of the AMV Contest and Screenings since 1997 -- someone else needs to step up so that the O2K4 AMV Contest 1. happens at all, and 2. doesn't suck.
The rest of the Otakon 2004 convention staff recognizes the unique qualities and wide appeal of the AMV Contest, are interested in having the AMV Contest continue at Otakon as it has in the past, and are willing to allow it to develop in the future. Although they're already searching the existing con staff for a new amv coordinator, I'm posting this message here too to make sure that everyone who might be interested knows that we're looking for a replacement.
Because the task of organizing and executing the AMV Contest & Screenings at Otakon has grown over the last several years beyond the point where one person can get everything done, we're assembling a small team of dedicated anime/AMV fans to push onwards with one of the biggest AMV Contests in Eastern North America.
Already signed up is Patrick Bohnet of Otaku Video, so Otaku Video's impressive abilities will be available for handling online submissions, digital format conversions, tape digitizing, and tape mastering. However, Patrick cannot (and will not) organize and execute the overall contest process -- his technical capabilities are very much a behind the scenes function, both before and during the convention.
In addition to the AMV Contest & Screenings Coordinator, assistant AMV staffers are needed to help with organizing and running pre-convention evaluation screenings, inviting AMV makers to be on the AMV panel, balloting & vote-counting during the convention, and tape duplicating for interested contest finalists after the convention. In order for the transition to go smoothly, I've already typed up a production schedule and submission rules for 2004 and will make myself available until the O2K4 AMV Contest is completed to explain existing methods & answer questions the new AMV staffers have.
Otakon is a 17,000 person anime/manga/asian culture convention held annually in Baltimore, Maryland in the late summer. Its AMV contest typically receives submissions from over 180 individuals or groups. If you love AMVs, don't mind working to get things done on time, and live within reasonable driving distance of Baltimore it would be ideal. You can e-mail "amv2003 at otakon dot com" (un-spam-proof the e-mail address before mailing) to get more details.
