Super GALS!... Less than super

Post by Zarxrax » Fri Sep 19, 2003 8:18 pm

Well, ADV has finally gotten around to releasing the first disc of Super GALS, one of my all time favorite series. The day it was licensed, I just KNEW they were gunna fuck this show up so bad. I knew it would be impossible for them to get right. However, I followed the release date, eagerly anticipating it, in the back of my mind hoping for the small chance that they would actually do it right. Having seen episode 1 now, I can safely say, they have indeed fucked it up  I do not have the heart to watch any further.
What's wrong with it? Lets see...

1. First thing I noticed, this HORRIBLE OVERLAY ON THE TITLE. I mean wtf is this? Can't they just put up a subtitle translating it? And they don't even write the full title.
2. Opening/Ending credits are changed. Okay, I don't really mind this a whole lot, but they changed the names of the freaking songs! WTF is the point of that? If someone happens to like the song, and wants to buy it, they sure as hell aren't gunna find it if they look under the name ADV decided to give them.
3. The spoken names of the next episode arent subbed in the previews. Uh... am I missing something here... or is this just utterly stupid? I mean you have a character talking really fast about the next episode, then when she says the episode title they dont sub it... then she says something else and the sub is back... wtf.
4. Weird translation oddities. Why are schoolgirls calling one another "Miss"? Why do they always reverse the names? I mean when I hear "Kotobuki Ran" and I read "Ran Kotobuki" at the same time, it just spins my head around in confusion. The way they handled the "Itazura" joke was a little less than steller, but sufficient, I suppose. Overall the translation felt very awkward to me.
4. Tan face gals? I had a good laugh when I heard this. There's no good way to say "Ganguro Gals" in english, but I am surely not the only one to think "tan face gals" sounds incredibly dumb.
5. Subsi-dates. WTF? You figure it out. There are so many better ways to say this.
6. TOTAL FUCKERY OF THE GALS LANGUAGE! This was perhaps one of the most important parts of the series. Look, I'm a reasonably guy. All the other mistakes they made, I could let those slide. But this... this just makes me want to kill someone. The stuff they did MAKES ABSOLUTELY NO SENSE AND SOUNDS UTTERLY STUPID. Half of it sounds totally made up, barely resembling the original intent.

Suffice to say, I won't be purchasing this series. It's broken my heart to see it in this manner.

/end rant

Well sorry to hear about your dissapointment. I didn't see the fansubs of this series but your video got me interested in it. so I bought the dvd hear about 5 secs of the dub and turned it off. The subtitles looked to me to be error ridden I was not impressed. But now I must see some fansubs to compare the translations. Other than those other problems the series was pretty funny with Ran making everyone her bitch like Lina inverse does.
