BS!

I've never heard such BS in my life! I've worked at a TV station for about 5 years, and I edited on a LINEAR AMIGA 2000, that's right, DECK TO DECK VHS, and I have WON NUMEROUS AWARDS for my work.

I've kicked the CRAP out of other productions done on the latest and greatest non-linear systems, from Adobe Premiere to $20,000+ Avid editing systems!

I've kicked the CRAP out of other productions done on the latest and greatest non-linear systems, from Adobe Premiere to $20,000+ Avid editing systems! All because the creator belived that by having an expensive editing system, it would MAGICALLY make him or her more creative... or magically make the edits in better locations... or make their graphics and special effects look better...

Truthfully, most of the time, when an editor gets to use an expensive or more advanced editing system they LET THE TECHNOLOGY GET IN THE WAY OF CREATIVITY!

It is really insulting when people who wish to improve themselves in a particular field believe that it's the TECHNOLOGY that will make them better, when the power to improve themselves is WITHIN THEMSELVES!!!

I apologize for my rant, but this thread hit a very personal nerve of mine. I'll get off the soap-box now...

Hehe, not to interupt your rant, but I do believe you are responding to some pretty thick sarcasm.

I really hate this idea.

The software you use really shouldn't have any bearing on the quality of what you produce. All this would do is reinforce a myth that you need expensive software to do good things.

I'm kind of sick of hearing that argument. People have this false delusion that having this magical expensive program will automatically make good videos. As I said in the other thread:

It's the editor, not the software that makes a video.

That may be true, but you can't deny that there are some things you can do with, for instance, Premiere, that you just can't do with WMM.

True...but being able to do those extra things doesn't mean you can't make a good video with WMM. :|

Again, I have seen good videos made with WMM. Sure Premiere can make uber-l337 lens flares and piano keys, but oh well. WMM has the ability to do cross-dissolves and straight cuts and I am a firm believer that you can make a good video with just these simple things.

Hell back in the VHS days, they *had* to make videos with limited capabilities and guess what? They made good videos. Big Big Truck's "Crazy Ass Violence" was made with two VCRs (given fairly good ones and some extra technology).

The argument still stands...

Looks like you kicked up a lot of dust with your first (?) post :o. As the others have pointed out, the software isn't the main issue. However, it would be possible to level the field by setting the contest rules to accomodate the lowest common denominator. For example:

* use any software package you want
* edit with unchanged footage (no effects of any kind)
* no overlays, no motion, no zooms, etc.
* transition with cuts, fades & cross-dissolves only
* etc.

I think this is closer to what you were suggesting. But it still doesn't level the field vis-a-vis experience, skill and talent. Beginners are handicapped no matter what the tools are.
