Rg Veda

Post by Tab. » Sat Sep 06, 2003 12:08 am

Some old clamp anime? Give me more info or pay the price of me shaking my fist at you from the other side of the internet.

Seriously, the Vedas are a set of sacred hindu books, recorded about 6,000 years ago in sanscrit and said to have been passed orally anywhere from their recording to 30,000 years ago. By far the oldest known writings on the planet. They're considered by hindus to be the collected wisdom of the gods and if you've ever studied vedic philosophy, you'll know why. At any rate, I'm not too familiar with the exoteric meanings and stories in the vedas, but it's said clamp followed the stories to some extent. I'm curious. I did recognize the name of one character, Asura, which actually just means demon or fallen angel in sanscrit, other than that I don't really know anything about the series.
Volunteers? Anyone?

The anime is just two short stories about 45 minutes each, both probably taken from the manga. The manga is where the full story is at. It's a stack of books a few feet tall. There is no official English translation that I know of, but there may be some fan-translations on the Web. The basic story involves a group of renegade royalty on the run following the conquest of heaven by some...real bad guys, I guess.

Anime episode 1 is about a lonely princess who captures the leader of the group. Episode 2 explores the tragedy behind the young girl in the group. Her mother was the queen of heaven who turned traitor, helped kill her husband, and put a death sentence on her daughter.

Although the artwork is nice, the animation is rough.

RG Veda is based on hindu mythology.

And as said, the anime was very short and rather cheaply produced. So if you want to thoroughly enjoy the series, read the manga.

It's heroine is a girl named Ashura. Ring a bell?
Reality is for people who lack imagination.

Ah, CLAMP fanboy time again...

The RG Veda anime is a two OVA set taken from the manga. The first OVA is from Volume 3, the second is from either 5 or 7; it's been quite a while since I checked.

The manga, which was CLAMP's first professional work, ran ten volumes, and it's rumored that TokyoPop just licensed it (crosses fingers, hoping it's true). I've heard that the anime was mostly a bone thrown to the fans of the manga to stop them from clamoring for a series.

The basic plot is that Taishakuten has overthown the Ashura line of royalty, and the Six Stars, which include the last Ashura decendant, and the five Kings and Queens of their clans, must unite and fulfill a prophecy given by the great Seeress. I'm not sure how the story goes from there, as I've only read the first two volumes (I'm using it to improve my kanji comprehension, so it's very slow going).

well, i've read the Chinese version of the 10 books. the story takes a rather strange twist at around book nine. guess that's pretty typical of clamp. i've seen the ova and the second one is not part of the manga story line.

basically, ashura and yasha were both the only one left of their clan. following the last prophecy given by the seeress, the seek 4 others that will unite with them to bring down the current emperor (who's also responsible for ashura and yasha's clan destruction). slowly, they meet the people part of the prophecy and headed towards the palace for the final showdown and truth. both book 9 and 10 revealed many unexpected revelations. anyways, the ending was not really spectacular. if anyone wants to know more just ask.
True happiness is but a dream. It does not exist.

It wasn't bad...

And I quote from the back of my dvd:

"Destiny calls. A brutal tyrant enslaves a dying race. Prophecy says that six warriors will end his despotic rule. Five mystical fighters search the land for the last of their kind, living by their wits and battle skills. Swords will clash as the battle between good and evil explodes!"

Though it really doesn't end...or begin either because it was taken from like the middle of the manga...(well so I've heard...I don't own the RG Veda manga :( ) I didn't find the animation all that bad though...it wasn't the greatest but the style was Clampish...so...twas good in my books...
