Any alternatives to Grokster/Kazaa?

Post by Slayerwolf » Thu Sep 04, 2003 1:08 pm

Does anybody here know of any alternatives to Grokster or Kazaa? I stopped using them after I had to restore my computer after deleting a file I thought was one of their spyware folders. I don't want the hundreds of spy-ware files that Grokster put on my computer. Did you know that on the setup alone, it installs 120-140 spy-ware files? And then it downloads even more over time. Can anyone tell me of a free, spy-ware free alternative to Grokster?

Didn't soulseek go down? I could be wrong, but the last few times I tried to log in, it was a no go.

Kazaa lite works also.

Try before you buy is still a good motto.

Just remember to buy.

I don't care if you download it, do whatever you want. As long as you buy my music!

It seems to have server crashes every once in a while. Granted, it's got an impressive database of hard-to-find music.

An additional problem with buying stuff that I have is not having a credit card. I'll buy it if a local RIAA-friendly or -unfriendly music store kindly provides it, but if not, I will resort to attempting to seek it out otherwise.

Try record label websites, like sub-pop.com, or the band's own website. A lot of smaller labels and their acts will feature one or two mp3s for public download.
Also, a lot of larger music review sites will feature an mp3 from a reviewed album for a limited time.

I find most new music by raiding the sampler bin at Cheapo, but that's only an option for Austinites, so... :|
