What probably happened is that they animated the show up to where it was on the Manga.... some part of Maximum. But trigun maximum kept going, and the show just got tapered off at the end.

You know, I remember a site where they would list some animes and choose some actors whom they would feel would be suitable for those characters. For Vash, they chose Brendan Fraser (for some crappy reason).

Trigun Maximum only goes as far as the series does, though the story is somewhat altered it doesn't go beyond the fight between Vash and Knives. I take that back alot of stuff is different in the manga but like someone said above, maximum starts when Vash assumes the name Eric.
