First off what codec is the media your importing in? (needs to be a lossless codec like HuffyUV)
Second is the jumpyness when you are playing the track not some hiccups in abode when it imports?
If it's still making the frame jump when you export the finished product then maybe it's because you are de-interlacing or resizeing in premiere which isn't really a very good program to do this in. Whenever I forget to turn deinterlace off on the final export or edit with frames going slower than 100% I get some very jumpy images.

I am importing mpg files or in other words mpg1 files or divx files. When i ran windows 98 it never did all of this. I don't use interlaced files they are always de-interlaced before i import them into windows xp...

Premiere + DivX = teh bad.

Try to use a codec like huffyuv and you'll solve most of your problems ;)

'Scuse me? HuffYUV is great for quality, but it's not exactly the fastes codec on the planet, and it certainly isn't tailored to use for NL editing. He wants faster results, not a computer thats as unresponsive as a sloth that has OD'd on Valium.

Try using the AVS switchout method, that can help alot. I've found it does, anyway.

And premiere + DivX 5.0.x = perfectly fine.

Hmmm, I never had any speed issues with huffyuv. Even when I was on a 650mhz processor it would play back at full speed.

Thats odd... I'm running a 1.54GHz and it lags... oh, but it does have uncompressed audio too...

Forget I said anything....

Probably your Hard Disk is just really fragmented. That can cause it to playback choppy, because the datarate is so large.

cant be, because I defragged it the other night and now its nice and fast again. It is probably to do with the fact that I only have 256 mb of ram, the HD is a 5400 rpm (shudder), the framesize of the video was 512x384 w'uncompressed audio, and I had a few things open at the time too. Like premiere. Which is a resource whore, almost as bad as Windows XP. Which I also had open. Obviously.

As Zarxrax pointed out, this greatly depends on your HD. Check here if you want some benchmarks on how huffyuv compares to other codecs

This, indeed, it's the best method to save HD space and edit with a reasonable performance.

I don't think so. DivX (as XviD and any other mpeg based codec) does not store all the frames of the video stream (refer to this for more details). This means that when you want to do a frame accurate seek in your clip, it has to go to the nearest keyframe and reconstruct the stream from there (and, believe me, I've seen footage with ONLY ONE keyframe at the beginning of the file... you understand what this means :P)

On the other hand, in huffyuv every frame is a keyframe and this makes it great for nonlinear editing.

With all of this I don't want to say that huffyuv is the BEST codec to edit with... it's just that if you don't want to resort to more complex methods (like the AVS/MJEPG switch), using huffyuv is a great compromise between stablility, quality and easiness of use (if you have enough hardware resources).

Just my 2c...
