Song lengthening: Done right, is it still a bad idea?

Post by Kenji11 » Fri Aug 29, 2003 1:57 pm

I am working on a video consisting of all kinds of Rurouni Kenshin(OVA, Seisouhen, tv) clips and Bebop and Knockin on Heaven's Door done to a emotional, but also angry and hard song by ADEMA, "Giving In". So far it beats my last video(which was mediocre and the only plus was that it showed i have some skill and unusual fondness for overlays) with a herring. Anyway I found myself really liking the timing and everything, until I found that I had reached the end of the song and not gotten what I wanted to fit into the video. Anyway, I found a way to pretty much flawlessly extend the song(not using a loop, some complicated song overlaping at a certain part and no chorus cuts or w/e). I wanted to know if you guys think that even if its done right, is extending the video(which still does not get boring or drag on due to the amount of variety and speed) wrong?

Well, it's a risk to take. There are people who enjoy longer videos and those who don't. To me, it seems like most people (especially at cons) will tend to lose interest towards the end. Even if there is constant action, some will just want something different after a certain amount of time. But, it's your decision, and if you aren't happy with it now, you should keep at it until you can be satisfied with it. If you think the best way of doing that is by extending the song, then you should. But it might be best to check out your other options as well, to make sure that there aren't any overlooked possibilities.

It's difficult to pull off, but cutting off the storyline may be worse than boring us with the song. So I'd say it's worth the risk.

Generally the rule is "less is more." I've watched many a video this year and thought... "um... hasn't thins song ended yet?"

Repeating song elements over and over is generally not a good thing in an amv, but if you can get it to work then mad props to you.

well like i said-ill try it long and see what the reaction is...
i did manage to get the song lengthening to be mostly unnoticable(and by that i mean that nothing seems outta place, obviously certain parts u've heard before)

Thanks for the props...im also making a short fast vid only about Enishi(has to be pretty short anyway) so ill have both sides of the spectrum
