O2K AMV Contest Winners

Ah well, congrats to all the winners and congrats to most of the entrants on making some excellent vids to view.

Somehow, I doubt everyone agreed with all of the winners- but it's kind of pointless to worry about it, as it was after all an audience vote, and only one of the categories (Action) was won by a razor-thin margin. The audience (or a pitifully small portion of them, all told) was responsibe for the winners, and they spoke fairly clearly on most of the categories.

I believe the honorable mentions were stated to be determined by whether or not a video got above the mean number of votes for its category (or third place in the # of votes, if no video got above the mean number). Truth told, all of the videos were more than worthy of Honorable Mentions... that's one of the down-sides to being in a contest the likes of Otakon's where everything is at such a high level.

Well As much as I like the idea of audiance voting, it really turns out that a miniroty of people voted from the audiance in the end so it is a true representation?

Personally I am finding that if you actually give out Ballots at the door at the start and a pencil, the turn out of ballots is MUCH higher.. This has been shown at AnimeExpo, Aninethon, Anime Evolution and SakuraCon (I pretty sure)....

Fanime had ballots at the door, but no one was handing them out (well they did to the creators) So alot of ppl just walked by and didn't notice, and/or too lazy to get outta their seat (or didn't want to loose their seat) and go back to get one. So the total was vote was around 500-600 outta almost 3k :l

AX had staff individually hand them out, and asked many times for ppl to raise their hands if they didn't get one. I don't know the total vote (and im sure some ppl didn't want to vote or threw theres away) but I'm sure it was alot higher turnout than fanimes.

3k? Try 15,000 or more. Otakon gives a ballot to *everyone* who goes to the convention within their regristration stuff. Given, probably only about 8,000 people saw the videos at the two contest showings, but 500 out of 8,000 is still really bad.

Problem is it's given in the registration package so lots don't bring it, forget or loose it by the time the contest cones around... I just find it has to be given right at the event with writing instruments or else lots pf people just don't bother...

Problem is it's given in the registration package so lots don't bring it, forget or loose it by the time the contest cones around... I just find it has to be given right at the event with writing instruments or else lots pf people just don't bother...

There's also the issue of people who want to download all the good AMVs right after the convention, so they just take the ballots and don't turn them in. They probably figure there's no other way to get the AMV information (or remember it). Why spend all your time frantically copying AMV information incorrectly in the dark, when simply not voting gets you all the information immediately?

Maybe what someone could try to do is to have a portion of the AMV ballot be detachable (like the whole right side or the top or something) so that the votes can be turned in, but the audience voters still get to keep the useful information....

From a budget & logistical viewpoint... how much do 4,500 little pencils cost? (I'm thinking those little ones they give you at Putt-Putt miniature golf because they're not worth stealing.) And how long does it take for one guy to hand out 4,500 AMV ballots at a screening -- an hour? How much time handing out ballots would having helpers cut down on?

It's probably about 6,000 people in the audience this year, so that's an estimated 8% response rate. It's about average for these circumstances.

Maybe we should ask people to write their names on the back and have a door-prize to induce more of them to vote.

On the other hand, that'd just get uninterested people to cast ill-considered votes so they could (possibly) profit from it. I'd rather have 500 sincere votes than 5,000 votes where people just voted for the first thing in each category or voted randomly so they (the voters) would be eligible to get a prize.
