Audio Commentary

Post by Anime Jedi » Fri Aug 16, 2002 5:24 pm

DVDs! They come with all these great new features. I would normally only look at those sections that would be quick to browse through, but recently I`ve tried to be more thorough. I first started with Evangelion: Death & Rebirth. Yah... I`ve already mentionned it in several threads. Anyways, it`s double sided, so a whole side is dedicaded to special features. It has the definitions for all the eva terms and summaries for each character. What I found was the coolest, was the audio commentary. It was practically the whole movie again, but instead of the regular audio, it was Amanda Winn Lee (eng-language director), Jason C. Lee (co-producer) and Taliesin Jaffe (anime enthusiast) commenting on the vid. It was really nice and helped me a lot of the stuff I found confusing.

Anyone else ever checked out this feature or got comments on special features?

The director's commentary by Ikuhara on the Utena Movie DVD is S U P E R B.

I usually get annoyed by commentaries by voice actors, especially on complex shows that they don't understand and/or havent seen properly except in the dubbing room (e.g. the Boogiepop Phantom commentary). It's a good commentary until the clueless bunch start talking and it's especially annoying that all the things that they promise to talk about later aren't talked about mainly because the later volumes have co-commentary by VAs who are asking "who's that character" all the time.

geh

It's a nice feature but rarely has original production staff featured, with the exception of the Utena Movie and the could-be-released-someday FLCL dvd.

Very true.

I really like the D & R one. It was pretty funny. Amanda Winn Lee (who also does the english voice of Rei) always liked to point out her favourite parts. Like the extra sound affects used for when Misato blows off the special forces guy`s head or when that NERV guy (forgot his name) says: -Damn! Haven`t they ever heard of moderation.

But they all sounded very professional. What I really enjoyed was when they helped shed light on the subjects I was confused with. Like when I noticed that all the audio playback from that Death footage (which was pretty much all old stuff) was new. They said that they needed to redo all of the talking for the movie. And when some characters had new voices (well, we could go on about voice changes, but another time), they explained how they couldn`t find the original characters. Or how ms. Lee put it: -Another one of those voice actors that seemed to just disapear off the face of the planet.

I`m not sure how well others are done, but it looks like I`ll just have to try others, to find out.
