How important is originality anyway?

Bah. I'm stupid. I meant to put my view in that reply as well. =\

Anyway, my opinion on the matter is... Going to leave holes...

Originality-
Some people view it as the song and anime choice. So, if you have a Linkin Park song set to DBZ, then it's obviously unoriginal. But if you have, say, All American Rejects set to Sonic X, you're original.
But, chances are, if you REALLY go out there, and make a vid with, say Gundam X set to an Injected song, no one will know what the hell it's about because they haven't seen the anime OR heard the song.
So, this view is clearly flawed, since the less original you are, the less views you'll get, yet the more original you are, the less views you'll get.. Hmm...

Other people believe that originality has nothing to do with the song or anime choice, but moreso the idea itself. Like, if you have a Trigun humor vid detailing the stupid things Vash does, or the Siato/Kenshin fight from Kenshin in a video, it's unoriginal. But if you do a character profile on Knives, or a drama video considering Sano and his best friend's attack against the government, you got yourself some pretty original stuff.
So, let's say you put Linkin Park's "In the End" to the Sanoske(sp.) drama.
You may lose some viewers JUST because it uses Linkin Park's most overused song ever, but if the video was made well, word will spread fast, and... Ultimately, next to everyone will like your video.

I kinda follow in the second group...

Originality is the lifeblood of the AMV world. If you're not going to add something new to the database, I don't think you should bother making the vid. Just my opinion. But the Final Fight + OAV isn't overused, so I say go for it.

My originality is on the high end (8.95 average), mainly because I pick offbeat anime/song combinations. Sure, Slipknot is overused, but with DiGi Charat? 8.8. DBZ is the most unoriginal source material out there, but with Janis Ian? 9.3, and even DBZ-haters liked it. Big O with Red Delicious? 9, and nobody will ever find it accidentally. I loves me some obscurity, mmhmm.

I hav a vid with LINKIN PARK song that hav 8.4 of originality....that is pretty high for me, of course I use that group with footage from Armored Core opening movie scenes , so the score is just good because I used a very original footage ,so if you're gonna use a overused group/song/anime , I AM SURE that many members will took points from you on originality ,but I agree with SSJVegita0609 , you hav to do what you want , and if you don't like the scores received , just make another vid ^_^

SCORES is nothing more than numbers in your vid , remember that making/watching AMVs is suposed to hav fun

Well, if we're all out to brag about our originality scores, now... My "Pills" has an originality score of 9.67.... Pink's "Just like a Pill" to various anime....

... And that was a REALLY sucky video... btw, it had 5 ops... And the sequel/remake is in process and should be out this year... If you were wondering... If you even remember "Pills"... Or liked it...
