Netiquette

Post by fyrtenheimer » Mon Aug 25, 2003 9:33 am

I have this book for my Intro to Computers class in college, and there's half a page dedicated to Netiquette - which is short for Internet etiquette, is the code of acceptable behaviors users should follow while on the Internet; that is, it is the conduct expected of individuals while online.

Golden Rule: Treat others as you would like them to treat you. LOL

1. In e-mail, newsgroups, and chat rooms:
  • -Keep messages brief and use proper grammar and spelling.
-Be carefule when using sarcasm and humor, as it might be misinterpreted. (ut oh)
    -Be polite. Avoid offensive language.
-Avoid sending or posting flames, which are abusive or insulting messages. Do not participate in flame wars, which are exchange of flames.
-Avoid sending spam, which is the Internet's version of junk mail. Spam is an unsolicited e-mail message or newsgroup posting sent to many recipients or newsgroups at once.
-Do not use all capital letters, which is the equivalent of SHOUTING!.
    -Use emoticons to express emotion.
    Popular emoticons include.
    :) Smile
    :( Frown
    :| Indifference
    :\ Undecided
    :o Surprised (HEY GABE)

-Use abbreviations and acronyms for phrases:
    BTW by the way
    FYI for your information
    FWIW for what it's worth
    IMHO in my humble opinion
    TTFN ta ta for now
    TYVM thank you very much

-Clearly identify a spoiler, which is a message that reveals a solution to a game or ending to a movie or a program.
2. Read the FAQ (frequently asked questions), if one exists. Many newsgroups and Web pages have an FAQ.
3. Do not assume material is accurate or up to date. Be forgiving of others' mistakes.
4. Never read someone's private e-mail.

(That's exactly what it says in the book. I just found it to be somewhat funny. I guess I better start using those emoticons ;) ;) ;) ).

I use :O just for "talking". Just for expressing that I am talking. Yes I have to include it. It's become habit and everyone hates me for it. I guess I should make a clube "People who hate me because I use :O all the fucking time...".

"TTFN" ta ta for now :/

I use BTW and ROFL/LOL that's about it. The other acros are TFFM(Too Faggy for Me).

Well, it was something I couldn't reply to.

If it makes you feel any better, I didn't even see Roke's.
