well snap then.
So in other words, one part of the community is waging war on another part of the community because they take their community seriously enough to want to do so. Then they tell the powerless side to get over the loss cause it's just an online community. I'm glad people make so much sense." -- Tab

Uh, or we could just eat, drink, and be merry, for tomorrow we die.
You know, metaphorically speaking.
If the central points get bitchslapped by the RIAA, it moves to IRC and CD swapping by mail. Western-media vidding gets along just fine without a westernmediamusicvideos.org. We have the tremendous luxury of having this fine site, but the diehards could still get along through other channels if the RIAA decided to be bitches about it.
So again, relax, enjoy, and don't worry about it.
My 2c.

Sarah...you're so optimistic! ^_^ I'm glad to see it, and I agree. Why look for trouble? It'll find us all eventually - might as well enjoy ourselves in the meantime.SarahtheBoring wrote:So again, relax, enjoy, and don't worry about it.

It's taken the RIAA over 8 years to bitch slap users blatantly sharing songs for the sole purpose of redistribution of the songs (and on a large scale) I think the question is
"Will the RIAA (or any other organization going after copyright infringment) ever go after a niche area of entertainment such as AMV's?"
You are right, there could be a fork in the road. IF there is, a site like this will be shut down (or at least the hosting would be killed) But even then, people would still legally be able to talk about making AMV's, make them, and watch them on their own. The people who would be affected the most by something like that are the ones who are looking for recognition from others, not those who make the AMV's because they want to.
Besides, people who get one song for every 50 to 100 MB download are not as important as the everyday joe who downloads 5 or 10 songs in an hour or two.

I'll just second the notion that we're nothing more than a gnat to RIAA, and possibly the most inefficient way to download music ever, so they have much better things to do with their time these days. I feel certain the average p2p user lacks the knowlege to demux the audio from an amv anyway, making it even less appealing.
There are independent bands out there who are not RIAA members, bands who don't have a contract at all, and there's j-music, too. Alternatives that the RIAA can't touch.
I've know a couple indie bands that release their own self-produced CDs, and when I have a few more decent vids done, I'm thinking about approaching them for permission to make a couple vids using their songs, with a link to their website in the credits, for non-commercial distro only, getting rights to the video is my responsibility, blah blah.
Anime distributors seem happy to turn a bllind eye at this point, because they understand that amvs fulfill the original purpose of music videos, which is to promote their product. What we do is different from DVD rippers, and fansubbers who distribute their licensed product in its entirety. If this were not the case, you wouldn't have amv contests at almost every anime convention, many of which are partly sponsored by anime companies. They can't acknowledge amv's in any official way, in order to protect their rights, but as long as they're willing to play the "'what's an amv?' wink, wink, nudge nudge" game, that's fine with me.
Nothing much we can do about it at this point, anyway. Just keep an eye out for any falling hammers, and be ready to run for the back alleys if and when that's necessary.

I'm currently working on a video using Falcon Five-O (listen to the track "Dirty Hot Girl", all you have to do is click on the flash "Listen to a few samples from the CD" link at the bottom) and art drawn by my best friend Darren (the boy can draw manga like you wouldnt believe) and animated by myself. I have talked to the band, and they are pretty gung-ho about the Idea. This for all intrinsic purposes would be a completely legal AMV.
