I can't help but reply to this.
I understand the current limitations presented by the database's structure, but when people start being reprimanded for simply making videos together... it really makes me ponder the integrity of some members and creators.
Regardless of the VCAs, regardless of databases...
There are lots of people out there who make videos together. I'm not talking about things like the DDR Project or the M:Is... I'm talking about videos like "<A HREF="http://www.animemusicvideos.org/members ... riEngel</A>," "<A HREF="http://www.animemusicvideos.org/members ... 590">Let's Get Down</A>," "<A HREF="http://www.animemusicvideos.org/members ... 329">Alone in the World</A>," and "<A HREF="http://www.animemusicvideos.org/members ... 14117">The Bounty Hunters Who Don't Do Anything</A>."
These videos are all made by two people. We're not talking about a video where someone edits a segment all by themselves, someone else does another one, and the two are stitched together end-to-end to create a longer video. We're talking about people (friends, relatives) who actually, physically, GET TOGETHER with each other in the same location to edit on the SAME video at the SAME time. Each of these members have completely different ways of entering in their collaborative videos.
With Nate and Jeff, Nate takes the credit and puts the video solely in his profile. However.. Jeff also worked on it with him. Why shouldn't Jeff be allowed to have the same video, which he DID work on, listed in his profile? It IS partly HIS video.
With turboneko, both partners go under the same member-name. Marco and Christina are two completely different people. Sometimes they do collaborative videos, sometimes they do individual videos. This can be a tad confusing. What if I'm looking for a video that JUST Marco did? What if I'm looking for a video that they BOTH did together?
With Meri and I, we both put the videos in our profile. We BOTH sat down and worked on them together; we should both be allowed to have complete profiles with ALL of our videos listed.
Sierra Lorna and Silver Moon created a separate account for collaborative videos. But... what if I only know of one of them? I can't find their "other" account if I don't previously know about it.
<B>Pros and cons of these methods:</B>
Entering a collaborative video ONCE into ONE profile goes "by the rules," but unfortunately leaves one member out of the recognition. That's not fair to EITHER creator.
Having a single profile for two people creates a false identity, but allows them to still go "by the rules."
Entering the same video into two different profiles goes "against the rules," but actually lets two editors be acknowledged, individually, for their collaborative work.
Creating a separate account goes "against the rules" for only having one account per member, but it does go "by the rules" in that there's only one entry per video.
So yeah. It's confusing, it's being done, and it's being done at least four different ways. Ironically, all of the videos mentioned above have been recognized in at least some way (be it conventions or at the VCAs). To disallow two people to receive recognition for their work (which, as we can see, is work that people actually WANT to see!)... that just doesn't seem to go with the "community" ideals of this... community. And that saddens me.

Hey VegettoEX,
I completely agree.
The system must be changed so that multiple creators can receive credit for a single video. My point is that the CURRENT system does not allow it. The system will be modified in the NEAR FUTURE (hopfully in the next few weeks, definitly before the end of the year) so that videos can be properly listed and credited. But, for RIGHT NOW, the multiple video creators must get together themselves and decide what to do in the mean time. They must decide who will list the video in which single user profile and who will have to wait until the system is fixed.
The catalog should have correct information. My point about the VCA thing is that if the information is not fixed by the time the VCAs roll around four months from now (right now matters little), then videos will not be allowed to participate. This is a motivation to create and maintain correct information, that's all.
The system will be fixed. It just takes some time...

Phade: Yeah, I know you agree, and I totally understand that it's a pain in the ass to "fix" and get it to work that way ^^;;. That's not an issue at all. The only thing I question is...
My proposal for the future system would be:
Video entries are independent of a member's profile, so that a video can be "entered" by two individuals (so that it shows up on both member profiles, but has the SAME video entry number... does that make any sense?). And then in terms of uploading, both could have the same local download link... ?
I'm not a programmer, so none of that even makes sense to me. I just can't fathom it. Honestly, I'm less worried about the programming of it than I am about the reprimanding of technically-correct information by peers. That, more or less, just disturbs me.
See.. that's the thing. In terms of pure data, all the information entered <B>IS</B> "correct." It may not completely abide by the site's rules... but... it's CORRECT information. I'd rather see correct information entered a little funny than incomplete or mis-information entered, and I can only imagine that you'd agree with me.Phade wrote:This is a motivation to create and maintain correct information, that's all.

Hey,
To the database, two seperate entries are two entirely different videos no matter the content of the entries. If one gets an opinion, the other does not. If one gets a star rating, the other does not. Having two entries for the same video is absolutly incorrect, the same as if a single member listed the same video twice in their own profile. The information contained in each entry my be in fact be correct, but since there are two entries for the same vid, it makes the overall information incorrect, both entries. To the database, they are just globs of text and pointers to records.
The way the upcoming collaboration system will work is that there will be one member who maintains all the video information, to be known as the "primary" member for that video. That primary member will have access to the music, anime, links, upload, etc. sections of the system and will be responsible for maintaining all of the information. The primary member will then list who are the collaborators for that video. To the rest of the world, there will be no way to tell who is the primary member (controls the flow of information) and who is not; they will all look exactly the same. The video will be listed in each collaborating members' profile exactly the same as everyone else.
This system will allow multiple credit for the exact same video while retaining the existing code so that the system does not have to be rewritten from scratch.
Right now, I'm finishing up the "automatic dead link check" system. When that has been completed, I will move on to the "collaboration" system. It's all a matter of time...

What you said perfectly explains how I would code it myself, had I the knowledge :P. Huzzah.

Wow... :thumbs up:
But when the collaboration system is up, will we be able to switch vids that are entered under the regular system to the collaboration system?Phade wrote:But, for RIGHT NOW, the multiple video creators must get together themselves and decide what to do in the mean time.
