I saw that on the news. They were going on about how they won't let cloned horses on the track. I don't care really about racing or not racing cloned horses as long as they don't clone Pharlap I be very happy.

I don't really know if cloning is all it's cracked up to be. We should be learning how to clone food and the like, or working on something that may generate a cure for the major world diseases.

Is it not true that when something is cloned, it will only live to about the time that the original sample dies? I think that the reason was because cells can only divide so many times. So when you take an adult, who has had many cell divisions, and clone it, you will have an offspring that will live half as long as the adult.

i.e. Bob is 40 and is going to live to be 80. He gets cloned, and the infant is named Bob the second. Bob 1 lives to 80, and Bob 2 dies at 40. And so on if you cloned Bob 2, Bob 3 would live to 20, etc. etc....

So there you have it, the downfall of cloning. It's also unethical to play God.

Why are we cloning anyways? What good does it do us?

Peace!

Why are we cloning? For the reasons you mentioned. Cloning livestock and other food items. Curing diseases. Growing single organs for transplantation. Why are we cloning horses right now? Because the technology is still incredibly new, and because of all the fearmongers who are afraid of it, it hasn't been getting very much funding at all. We have to start small or else we'll never get anywhere with it.

As far as it's not ethical to play God, that's bullshit. Everyone's ethics are different. To you maybe it's unethical, but to me it's more unethical not to use the technology to it's utmost to help mankind.

Unethical to play god.

Well God certainly does have some explaining to do, I expect a little more ethical behavior from such a major deity.

Clones don't necessarily die sooner than the parent, but they age and break down faster internally. Like Dolly the cloned sheep: she's already got arthritis, as I recall, which is not supposed to show up in a sheep her age. She'll probably live as long as any other sheep, but inside she's "older".

in other words ... clone infants ... other wise you get allkinds of fuck ups ... untill we find a way to fuck with the cells internal cocls ... in which case all hell will break loose and the planet will have it's fate sealed ... at elast teh way i see it, it will.

I actually think it makes sense. Cells can only divide so many times. Then they die. If cells were able to reproduce themselves for an infinite amount of time, then we wouldn't die. What do you think causes aging? The human body breaks down because fewer and fewer cells are dividing.[/quote]

Well i can understand cloning animals if there if a food shortage or something, but while some people may look at the whole picture and think cloneing humans/animals/whatever and experimenting and killing them off to help make the rest of mankind better may be ok to some, but I don't really like the idea. But hey, who am I to stop the government.
