AMV BitTorrent Tracker now available - please try!

Post by GAlbright » Wed Jul 30, 2003 4:06 am

Hi all. Over the last few days I've been pouring blood, sweat and tears into getting a BitTorrent tracker especially for AMVs and other animation video files up and running on my web site, and I've finally got something passable up and running.

Please, if any of you out there would like to try this as a new method if distributing your AMVs, give it a try! Share your vids (or maybe just your favorite vids by others), and download other peoples'.

I think BitTorrent and AMVs could be a cool combination, and I'm surprised not many folks have tried it before.

For those not in the know: BitTorrent is a new filesharing protocol which has some distinct advantages over services like KaZaA. For all the technical stuff, see the official site; suffice it to say that, you'll probably find it interesting if you're sweating over how to host or share your video files. Upload your video to just one or two folks, then let everybody else share your video among themselves! That's the basic gist.

Here's more info:

Or, if you want to go straight to the tracker:

Let me know what you think!

I'm all for it!

In fact, one of my studio members had this idea a while ago ^_^ He hosted for me VIA bittorrent for a bit ^_^

Oops... there was a glitch in the sign-up code which gave you the wrong confirmation URL in the validation email it sends you. I've fixed the glitch, and "manually" validated everyone's account, so everyone who signed up should be able to log in now.

Glad to see some of you like this idea. So let's see some more submissions! An inherent flaw in BitTorrent is that you can only download/upload nine files at a time, so I'm maxed out on what I can share right now...

Arg... I've been running this thing for days, but have yet to have anyone actually download anything. Is this due to technical problems, or just a plain and simple lack of interest?

After all the effort I put into getting this thing up and running, I wanna see it take off, dammit.

Bit Torrent is a great app, but it has it's strengths and weakness.

It is best used to distribute files that can generate high demand, and keep a fair number of people downloading and sharing the same file over a fairly short peroid of time.

Seems to me it would be great for stuff like HQ versions of multi-editor projects, con documentaries, fan parodies like This is Otakudom, Fanboy Bebop, on VCD, SVCD, or as large mpeg files. Basically, stuff that is too big to host on the Donut, and would kill one individual's monthly webhosting.

I'm not so sure it works well as a means to distribute individual amvs at this point. People want the memory each instance of BT takes up, and their bandwidth back, after seeding a file for a few hours or days.

Agreed. Although I rather think BitTorrent is rather unfair in it's distribution model. Everyone has the part you already have, which makes it propogate more. Additionally, people are going to be downloading that segment more than you are receiving. It's a big triangle... who's to say that the file will ever get done?

Other methods os distributed distributions hsould be considered. Currently, the "official" sanctioned distro medium is the Doughnut, of course. With the advent of broadband, however, a distributed content propogation system may be an effective way of dealing with high-demand content. Think about it - all that idle consumer tube going to good use.

I'm currently expirementing with a componenr small-scale, closed system propogation model with support for trust metrics, etc; however that's more geared toward distributing WMAs (better than Ogg) while thwarting the MPAA b*stards.

GAlbright, I tried to dl off your site yesterday and today. Bittorrent couldn't seem to get a connection. Yesterday there were seeds but none today. Has anyone else had this problem? Could be a firewall thing but I'm fuzzy on how bittorrent handles problems like that.

There were probably no seeds today because you tried to connect while I was asleep and had my computer off (and I'm the only one seeding these things at the moment).

Oh well. This is probably a failed experiment more due to lack of interest than all the technical stuff danielwang ran off (though saying WMA is better than Ogg makes me seriously question his technical authority in the first place :P ). Arg. Well, there's six hours of cursing at my web server and countless hours of trying to seed these things wasted.

Dammit.
