File Sharing Server Shutdowns!

File sharing is being shutdown everywhere, perhaps due to liability to the school. I undestand that and respect their choices, and I believe in this legal climate I would want them to do that. But vigilante shutdowns, scanning people's ports when they use too much bandwidth is too much. In fact, some schools are adding heuristic detection systems that scan content type and amount, and shut down the user if certain outbound limits are reached.

Those guys suck. I'll just use Ethereal to sniff the network, passively or in promiscious mode, and just connect to the 'Net as somebody else (admin). Router not cooperating? NetBIOS his box. Wait, there's an easier way. Go to the lab, get the IP and MAC from a Mac, quite fittingly, disconnect it's cable and masquerade as the disconnected Mac.

Now to go over to Comp USA to get one of those NICs with flashable firmware. Or I might just install Linux on an Xbox (Xbox's NIC's MAC can be set my Linux) and lock that somewhere for a week. If someone cuts the blue cable running into my locker, or breaks into it (CINS Admins) then I'll be out $200. But that's worth it for having my own permanent server there (DSL here is $40 a month).

yea ... but i never share files at school ... there is a very big lack of what you can do at a shich school ... now i can understand schools where you take residence ... but still i don't care, i'll still share at home.

Fucking RCIAA bastards ... all this time we were being brought up to belive sharing was good ... greedy hole-bags ...
