Anybody watched G Gundam on Cartoon Network?

Post by KLin » Tue Aug 13, 2002 1:54 pm

How are the dubs? I'm a bit scared to watch to see because G Gundam takes after the Super Robot genre (And DBZ too) of screaming out ougi and hissatsu attack names and those just don't carry over into English very well at all. Plus there's the small amount of religious inferrences... (God Gundam and Devil Gundam) They just better not get censored or changed. >_< At least now there's a chance Chibodee Crockett's broken Engrish can be improved (I hope)

A lot of older Gundam fans consider G Gundam to be the best of the 3 Alternate Universe Gundam series. (That is better than Gundam Wing and Gundam X) so I'm interested to see how the numerous GW fans here will react to this older, but recently translated series.

Ah well, I guess I'll chance watching it today. It airs at 5:00 PM EST and PST time for those who don't know and are in those time zones.

Well, I was pleasantly surprised, the dubs weren't half bad. They even added some reverb for the ougi and hissatsu attacks so that they wouldn't fall flat. Although the English announcer didn't seem quite as enthusiastic but at least the English was much more understandable and unbroken. They did censor it a bit, however. As expected, the Devil Gundam got a name change. It's now the 'Dark' Gundam

I don't remember if they have a Tequila Gundam. Maybe you'll find out tomorrow, since the opponent is from Mexico. :D I know the Netherland's Gundam was really funny looking with it's Windmill Gundam. A lot of G Gundam's designs for the 'less-important' countries aren't really that good, but all the designs are supposed to reflect Japanese stereotypes of those countries anyways. :)

i like how they pushed the varied designs of the gundams further than gundam wing. especially how they try to compose each one behind each country. but why does the russian gundam look like he has a huge overcoat?

It's probably a Japanese stereotype of Russians. Geographically, Japan is closer to the northern parts of Russia than to it's southern parts. So probably in most of the dealings that they have had with Russians, Japanese meet with the folk that live on the colder regions and thus tend to wear heavy overcoats and fur caps. At least, that's my inferrence. In the few anime with Russians in them, some sort of coat and cap usually can be seen worn. (Gunsmith Cats, fullmetal.panic!, etc.)

It could also simply be because the Bolt Gundam's base looks pretty cold and it needs the extra warmth. :D

So does the American Gundam have a stars and stripe paint job, a cowboy hat and lasso, and a huge penis?

I've been sick and its totally screwed up my sleeping schedule, I'm just about on a Graveyard shift time frame -_-

It bums me out to because I used to have the French and Chinese Gundam models and I always wanted to see them in action.

G Gundam is all about the stereotypes...

The British Gundam looks like a Hunter, right down to the blunderbuss like weapon (and I understand it has Robotic Hounds)

The Egyptian Gundam is a Mummy

However... what little I remember for G-Gunda was that it was pretty campy anyway.
