Dialogue in AMVs - appropriate or no?
The topic says it all, basically. I want to use dialogue from an anime in my AMV - either on its own or accompanied by the scene itself. I am leery of this being appropriate because I can envision the AMV ending up more like a movie trailer than a music video, although the dialogue I'd be using is very limited and very closely related to the song I've chosen.
i.e. The AMV starts out with a scene from the anime (maybe) and the corresponding dialogue, with my music in the background (either this, or just the dialogue and other scenes hand-picked for their appropriateness). Then the music takes over... forward regular AMV...and in some of the refrains/chorus', I'd bring back more of the dialogue, either on its own or with the corresponding scene again. Mostly I'm interested in doing this because the song I've chosen fits the anime, but the underlying theme of both is best brought out by the dialogue I've in mind.
Opinions?

It works fine, and I've seen it in a lot of amvs.
However, I will warn you that you should be careful when using the English dub audio because it may cause your video to be disqualified from contests (as somecon organisers do not want to get into trouble for using material which is solely copyrighted by a company who will be at the con. Japanese audio tends to not be a problem)

still, dosent a con have to get premition to HAVE an amv showing, and with that premition goes all the rights with footage, songs and any dialogue thats IN the amvs? i mean, we all agree that AMVs are not legel, but how do they get around that at cons?

Manga Video, for example, don't outright own the copyright for Perfect Blue but they do own the copyright for the Perfect Blue DUB. They own distribution rights - it's a different thing.XenoDrake wrote:yet they dont care about all the copyrighted footage they are letting people watch.
As for how cons deal with copyright, I think that's something for a different thread because it will take this one off topic. In short, some cons do not allow audio from english dubs in videos so check before submitting.

Umm, if there's any sort of voices involved in the animation, then there's a dub. And accordingly, someone who holds the copyright for that dub. So yeah, check the rules just in case.DriftRoots wrote:Hmm, ok, so I'm not going totally out on a limb, here. And as far as the copywriting concerns go, there is no dub in the anime I'm using, since it was originally done in English.![]()
Cool, now I've just go to mess around with the audio track.

No english Audio?
That's dangerous... So, if you can't enter a con due to Dub, would it be ok to submit one with Japanese Dialogue with [*gasp] subtitles?
Can the rights of subtitles be restricted as well?

yes, you can enter a video with subbed Japanese dialogue at most cons. This artifice helped mckeed win Best Drama at Anime Boston.
However, you can't use pre-existing subs from either fansubbers or official distributors; you have to translate it yourself, or at the very least overlay the text yourself, since they can't prove that you did or didn't do your own translation.

Well, Otakon won't allow you to use subtitles done by an English distributor. For instance, you can't use the subtitles provided on the ADV release of Gasaraki. I guess you can put in your own subs...though if you just rip off the translation directly, that's going to a gray (closer to black) area right there.OmniStrata wrote:No english Audio?
