Death and Taxes. My country sucks. Does yours?

Post by danielwang » Mon Jul 21, 2003 11:21 pm

DOUGLAS COUNTY.

Parking fees are up. There's no parking anywhere. When there is, there's a meter. F*cking METERS.

Water surcharges. Sure, there's a drought. But quadratic water rates and $500 dollar fines?

Homeowner association fees. School fees. District "Improvement" Fees.
Motor vehicle registration fees. Riding a bike in the park fees. Using air, sunshine and grass fees.

Taxes - government appraiser accused of overvaluing homes.

Library district - late fees hiked to 20 cents and account lockouts more often. Collection. Don't get me wrong, I understand the fiscal situation and I like the library. But this is the wrong time.

Literally sleazy, immoral policemen who give speeding tickets on Christmas Eve. Well, at least it's not Denver Police (keps spy files on protestors) and Aurora Police (officer indicted in shhoting). Oh, wait, I forgot. A Douglas County policeman "accidentally" started a fire not so long ago.

Sound like they're reaming to me.

But of course.

Where there's a high place, there's corruption. I mean, you'd be stupid not to expect that. That's like walking into a cave and expecting it to be bright inside.

Yeah sucks to be you. I don't pay land rates or any associated fees because I don't have a permanent address. The only money I give to any particular government are taxes I pay on goods and services that are included in the price.

Driving and having a car is a privilege, not a right.

I feel for you. I live in a county of ever increasing property taxes, and we pay 65 cents a gal of gas in county taxes too. This county tries to run out a legal "adult shop" just because the fine upstanding citizens dont want that type of business in town. Although they went through all the permits and legaly opened the shop (should have thought ahead with the zone commission and prohibited that kind of store, but they didnt) the county shut them down and spent countless millions (of my tax money) in long court battles to close an other wise leagal establishment. If the fine upstanding citizen did not want that kind of shop then logic would be that no one would shop there and it would go out of business. But that is thinking with logic.
I wont even go into the sherriff situtation here, corruption runs deep in the drug capitol of the US.
Also our port, we have a man in town who owns about 45 acres of port property, the county went into contract negotiations with him to buy the land, then broke the contract, a year later they wanted to buy the land again (offered much less money this time) he says he does not want to sell the land for less than its worth and so what do they do... they go to court again and are trying to condem the land so they can take it...
This is small town America ... .... I had hope that this county might be an exception, but alas it appears that this is happening in other places too. Is there no hope left?

I remember that, it was in the Denver Daily News column sometime. It's interesting how local control always seems to be more lenient on the real issues but tight on the idiotic ones. We've had the individual counties compaliain about gun control and squeeze tax dollars.

In terms of the general country's law enforcement and politics, it's just plain ridiculous. The Denver "Ticketmaster" Police are saints compared to what the RIAA and DirecTV are doing now - suing smartcard distributors to hand over client information.

Think Denver's police shooting and spy files are enough? In Denver, out local Tattered Cover bookshop was sumpoenaed under some terrorism law to get the card number of someone who bought a book.

The courts overturned that decision. But bookstores? That bites...
