Thank you all.
The problem is, of course, not making the creative decision but actually describing the recognition process. There isn't a universal descriptor for classifying footage, and the thing that always happens to me is:
I acquire insufficient footage.
I adjust parameters to allow more footage.
I get too much footage.
I filter it out, but I end up cutting the part I wanted to put in.
I end up using cheesy scam algorithms and neutral transitions which make The Org's members scream bloody AMV murder.

Try not to worry too much about such things... The most we can do is "look" through the video. We're not in direct control...
I just hope that should any mistakes be made, perhaps there are ways to fix it. It's pretty tough to find that "perfect balance" that makes both anime and AMVs shine out amongst the others...
I'm a technical score junkie anyway. Artistically? Stay far away from me. [/me hopeless romantic amv editor ^_^]

From what I've done so far, this is my do's and don't's list, which helps to keep me in check when I get too crazed:
DO...
1. realize that I will, at some point, want to quit.
2. give ideas some time to be mulled over and mature.
3. write these ideas down, legibly.
4. keep listening to songs/watching videos to see if I can stand prolonged exposure to them.
5. shamefully enlist the assistance of technically-savvy boyfriend with no promise of an end product.
6. force myself to keep working on the AMV no matter what.
DO NOT...
1. think this will be easy.
2. rush into things.
3. get sidetracked on other projects.
4. assume my AMV will kick @$$.
5. ever be satisfied with "good enough."
6. forget this is supposed to be fun.
