Step 1: Listen to the song.

Step 2: Become Inspired

Step 3: Scribble down notes to specific moments.

Step 4: Edit

You seriously have people waiting around doing nothing, in anticipation of your videos?

I'd have to agree with this. Generally the concept/vision is enough to get me through the rest of the video.

I mean I do things like "scripting" (writing scenes to time stamps), but at the same time, stuff like this and the editing aren't as important as the inspiration.

Unfortunately, I can't tell you how to necessarily get this since well..it's different for all of us. I generally listen to a lot of music and *some times* an anime and concept click with it and after awhile...the vision becomes so over-bearing..I have to do it.

Not to be rude DanielWang, but there's not "set way" on how to create a music video (like you are trying to find). We're all different and thus there is no real answer. Sorry.

Now if you have more technical or specific questions...feel free.

Plan? What plan? :D

Seriously, I have a plan that depends on whether I'm using English or J-pop. If the song's in English, I make a rough lyric-synch storyboard and pretty much do the rest by the seat of my pants. If it's J-pop, I make more of an effort on logical scene progression since lyric synch would be lost to the public.

Either way, my first step is to listen to the song until I memorize every single beat and could sing it in my sleep if I lived alone

I thought Vlad had him now? I know he's gotta start work on his Master's entry too. I mean you can't hog him for your pro and DDR video right? :-P.

I wonder if anyone knows what I'm talking about :(.

I don't have a 'design' process. I have a pretty battle-tested production process, though, the result of about eighty projects' worth of trial and failure. Video concepts come fast and loose, and scripting is flexible to account for differences between what I have in my head and what I'm actually able to get the anime to do.

The Shin Hats production process:

1. Get idea. By listening to new music, watching anime, or plain old magic.
2. Put idea in to-do list. If it doesn't sound dumb when it gets to the top of the queue 6-8 months later, it's probably going to be decent.
3. Rip song.
4. Capture anime source.
5. Cut through anime source for useful footage. Repeat until through selected episodes/chunks, 100% overage has been reached, or the red haze of bloodlust starts to creep on.
6. Time song events.
7. Draft video. In real-time, so I don't have to do any prior planning.
8. Pre-render effects. As noted in draft process and minimal at best.
9. Build final video.
9a. Build final video.
9b. Build final video.
9c. Threated to wipe goddamn computer's drives and build final video.
10. Produce mixdown version for distro.
11. Clean all project material off drives and onto CD.

If you've got a process like this, you can make a pretty accurate determination of where you are in the trajectory from 'not started yet' to 'done'. It also keeps you on pace if you're thinking about hitting certain milestones.

Outside of that, it aint actually good for much, but it's semi-applicable here.

All you really need is a pinch or two. His, erm, "raw source" could be divided between several creators at this point.

Sick but something interesting to think about.

Simplicity.
You are (I hope) joking, but this made me think of something that would be cool to do (probably difficult, though): find two songs that have (or can be edited to have) the same structure and length. Edit a video that can go with either song but will have a different meaning depending on which song you use.
I am actually currently trying to prove that you can remove the audio from 70% of anime music videos and replace it with MC Hammer's "Can't Touch This" and the video works as good if not better than the original. I have 3 videos I'm currently doing this to that you should see next week in some form of compilation.
