Here's another - perhaps nutty - idea for a fundraiser. It shouldn't take too much time to get it going, but it would require an hour or two on the AWA VAT at a time when a decently sized audience could be counted upon showing up. It also requires that an AMV server be in place and ready to play on demand any of a large number of AMVs - which I assume is the case at AWA and probably not at any other con. The server is a key item. In a real sense, people who donate will get to experience and use what they are donating towards.
The "rules" are simple. Basically, people in the audience nominate videos to be in the contest. A video is nominated by the immediate, on-the-spot donation of $5, $10, etc. to the VJ, along with the name of the video. A pledge might be acceptable, too. And perhaps the nominator should have a tape/CD/DVD in case the video is not in place already. A minimum donation amount will help to regulate the number of videos that get played (and limit the amount of time that is needed).
Judging is an open issue. Audience applause, with or without a meter, might be the easiest. Or maybe a GOH could be persuaded (coerced ?!) into being the judge. Or maybe let the VAT staff choose. But no ballots; ballots are too much work. And it's important not to take the judging too seriously since this would (should) be a charity type of event.
As for prizes...I don't know. A six-pack? A sketch by BigBigTruck? A spindle from the AMV Distro? Whatever. I'm just throwing out ideas here.
This looks like it should be easy to do. If I understand how the VAT works, you're probably doing this already, except for the part about collecting money. The hard part would be getting a good time slot.
The downside is that it doesn't help get the server built before AWA.
