here is the bigest problem with DVD-R

my machien with the DVD-R is also my compositing machine which I use to master Otakon and AWA's pro and Master's contest...

hence another reason I can't burn off DVDs right now...
I can two weeks (hopefully) the Master's deadline when the contest is in the judging stage... But again... thats almost time for AWA... and the time I need the additional space....

Right now I am scavanging space from B-Ko to make up for the master server being short... this si not good since B-Ko is not redundant... and a drive failure will fuck me
Lead me not to temptation, for I have deadlines

Here's another - perhaps nutty - idea for a fundraiser. It shouldn't take too much time to get it going, but it would require an hour or two on the AWA VAT at a time when a decently sized audience could be counted upon showing up. It also requires that an AMV server be in place and ready to play on demand any of a large number of AMVs - which I assume is the case at AWA and probably not at any other con. The server is a key item. In a real sense, people who donate will get to experience and use what they are donating towards.

The "rules" are simple. Basically, people in the audience nominate videos to be in the contest. A video is nominated by the immediate, on-the-spot donation of $5, $10, etc. to the VJ, along with the name of the video. A pledge might be acceptable, too. And perhaps the nominator should have a tape/CD/DVD in case the video is not in place already. A minimum donation amount will help to regulate the number of videos that get played (and limit the amount of time that is needed).

Judging is an open issue. Audience applause, with or without a meter, might be the easiest. Or maybe a GOH could be persuaded (coerced ?!) into being the judge. Or maybe let the VAT staff choose. But no ballots; ballots are too much work. And it's important not to take the judging too seriously since this would (should) be a charity type of event.

As for prizes...I don't know. A six-pack? A sketch by BigBigTruck? A spindle from the AMV Distro? Whatever. I'm just throwing out ideas here.

This looks like it should be easy to do. If I understand how the VAT works, you're probably doing this already, except for the part about collecting money. The hard part would be getting a good time slot.

The downside is that it doesn't help get the server built before AWA.

$1772?!?!?!

You can obtain pre-owned EMC Celerra Enterprise Storage for considerably less than that pricepoint. Use Iosmegabyte (pr: Zippy Disk) NAS/SAN storage and it's even cheaper. Better yet, those hot swappable drives fit in a briefcase.

It's so much cheaper when you don't have to buy the computer. A network appliance and a routing server will do for the most part, with Ethernutty (not optical) it's even easier.

By the way, is this a personal storage/archival project, or is this like the "Library of Congress" AMV repository? It would be intersting if these older AMVs were availible at a later date.

from what i've read, it's to archive and store all the amvs that were ever created and will be created. it'll be something like a muesuem.

[has just donated monies]

Sound interesting. I'll go for it.

Just wondering, when do you think an (possible out of print) AMV will necessitate and qualify for restoration? Whthet it's someone who wants to see/use a classic AMV, to AMV exhibition, it will eventually happen.

Once it gets big enough after a few years... just think what could happen. The On-demand AMV Channel. Or not.
