Help tune planned new site feature: Which anime are similar?

Post by derobert » Sun Jul 20, 2003 4:47 am

I've been working on a neat new site feature for a while now. We'll have to figure out exactly what to do with it once its done, but right now the algorithms need some tuning work.

On the below-linked pages, you'll see several tables. The tables are displayed in a random order (to avoid biasing, of course). At the top of the page is listed an anime. The tables should show, starting at the top, the most similar anime in the database. The tables contain three columns: The first column is the rank (0 is most similar; 19, least). The second column is the sameness score, the higher the better. The last column is the name of the anime. Click on it to go the the page for that anime.

Please tell me which table(s) work best overall. Also, please note any specific problems you see.

Here are some links to get you started:

<a href="http://www.animemusicvideos.org/anthony ... 65">What's like Urusei Yatsura?</a>
<a href="http://www.animemusicvideos.org/anthony ... 04">What's like Tenchi Muyo?</a>
<a href="http://www.animemusicvideos.org/anthony ... 83">What's like El Hazard?</a>
<a href="http://www.animemusicvideos.org/anthony ... =5">What's like Slayers?</a>
<a href="http://www.animemusicvideos.org/anthony ... 29">What's like Excel Saga?</a>

Thank you!

Oh, I see, you are using different methods to classify the "sameness" of the anime. Well, I haven't really seen many anime, but table 2 and 4 seem to work better for some of the listings.

This is something I was going to put in site suggestions, but since you are working on the tables here, I think I'll mention it. I think it would be great to use the opportunity presented by the local file hosting to use the star ratings given by individuals to help calculate what "other" videos people liked. Something like this could be shown as links to other vids after the download of the local vid starts. Similar to the way links will be given to other movies that people who purchased "this movie" liked, at online stores.
