Philosophy of anime, etc... page 1i! of 2pi^e

Post by danielwang » Wed Jul 16, 2003 10:05 pm

I'm writing some dissertations on anime series and I have a few notes I quite haven't figure out yet.
The closest resource I've found is "Contemporary Anime" by Susan J Napier, which is great but not of much use in this field.
Got any opinions?

In Vision of Escaflowne, we can see that Gaea sees our world as a moon, which may or may not be reciprocal. Aside from the cliche alternate world devices and the quite frankly flawed physics description, this could mean several things.

A common theme in literature (and anime) is a mirror world. THis may or may not be explicitly describes as being a replicate priciple of our environment but may reflect or represent a certain state of the character, etcetra. What do you think this could mean in terms of Gaea?

By the way, I'm also trying to determine how this may apply to .hack/SIGN, however I hgave not yet finished the series and are therefore unable to make any conclusions.

Additionally in Escaflowne, there is a character named Allen Schezar, who pilots a big mecha named Schezerade. Querying Scherezade (derivative) returns a lot of obscure references to mythology, etc, including some TV show. Still trying to track down.

I'm also trying to make a large generic statement about mecha without covering what Susan Napier has already covered. According to "Contemporary Anime", mecha may represent power, force, or the technological ideal, etc. It is usually a influencing factor, positive or negative, as such.
What's interesting is that in many works, the mecha works in unison with the operator, whether by design (technology explanation ala M*c) or principle. The mecha usually even looks humanoid. And of course there's the usual mecha-a-mecha combat with swords, etc. What's the story?

As usual:

I personally don't have any opinions to give you. I'd just like to mention a few things.

There can be millions of different philosophies attributed to anime of all kinds. The different kinds could depend on the creator, the viewer, or both. Anime happens to have some of the deepest moods, settings, emotions, etc. so philosophies would go hand-in-hand with it.

As for .Hack//SIGN, I think you're correct in the sense of alternate worlds. Everyone who plays the game feels no pain in the game and *lives* in the real world. For Tsukasa, on the other hand, the game has real-world consequences and the character *lives* in the game rather than the real world (because Tsukasa is in a coma in the real world).

I have no idea where I'm going with this. My mind suddenly just went blank...

there have also been many more occasions when rabid fans give meaning to where there is no meaning. they make it more than it really is.

It happens every day at the School of Liberal Arts around here.

I only take around 5-7 pages of notes on a signle episode, a 17-20 page research dissertation for a series at best. It seemed every single English class had to have a paper referencing anime in it's bibliopraphy.

You should see what some of our Philosophy and Sociology majors are handing in. Everything from why historical anime is popular in Japan to straight documentation of the social and cultural incluences in anime. Research ranged from "The Anime Companion" and (I think) "Space Samurai" to fansites. Somebody even went and found out that "the gunfire sound effects in 'Ghost in the Shell' were foleyed from actual weapons for realism".

POP QUIZ:
In Yu Yu Hakusho, Episode 16, _______ creates a ice sword with his hand. Which of the following laws of thermodynamics is violdated:

1: Decreasing energy in a closed system
3: Reverse cold transfer without a work input
5: Enthalphy is ignored: no loss
Biot-Savart Law: Build path of ice sword
Reynold's Transport Theorem: Energy frows again path of least resistance

NO, "Spirit Energy" is not considered a work input. Even it was in the quantum field, the build for the ice sword would be almost 300 calories delta (equivalent to 50kw) work input. And it requires *contact path*, not line of sight.

I concur. What I'm getting here is, there hav =e been instances in the anime where actual events in the world have similar or even mirrored effects as those in the real world. In the first session, it can be especially notes that Mimiru lectured Tsukasa on how actual respnsibility in the world. Although his presence is partially escapist, in Ep 6 Tsukasa does accepts responsibility for someone's pet...

I have no idea where I'm going with this either.
I'm sleepy.
