RealMedia without RealOne :*

Post by Tab. » Wed Jul 16, 2003 6:51 pm

Yes, you all can FINALLY stop bitching about RM and start using it. I've hooked you up with a true alternative to RealNetwork's software. Don't get me wrong, RealOne is fine software, and harmless (unlike earlier players), but for some reason a lot of people still bitch about the concept of having it installed.
So, I present to you two installers.
Real's Codec package which is usually only installed with RealOne. The person who packaged these thought it would be a good idea to include Gabset's Media Player Classic since that can play back Real files. Don't install this, you won't need it, and it just sets a bunch of needless registry keys. Just install the RealMedia Codecs.

The second installer is a filter for playing RealMedia back through directshow. This allows you to watch RealMedia in directshow players like Windows Media Player, use RealMedia as a directshowsource in avisynth, and mux RealMedia into new containers like Matroska with graphedit. The installer also includes Matroska playback filters.
Thanks to AD who taught me the l33t ways of NSIS over visual basic and helped me figure out how to make this installer.

With these two installers combined, you can get rid of RealOne (or never get to begin with) and watch Real files.

See this threadon doom9 for more information about Real, including how to encode.

Here is an example you can use to test of RealVideo and RealAudio in the Matroska container.

And as a point of comparison, take a look at the best alternative, XviD and Vorbis (if you don't already have ogg vorbis installed get it here)

Also, a mixed combination of the above would be XV_RA.mkv(formerly known as 1.mkv :p ) and RV_OG.mkv(2.mkv). But they're the same as the above, just with switched audio. Don't get them if you don't need, my host is really slow.

There you have it folks.

Note: If you have RealOne and don't want to get rid of it, don't bother downloading the first installer (codec pack), you don't need it. You can still download the second if you want to get the directshow RM and matroska playback though, which is quite useful even with RealOne.

I thought I would get off easy by just linking stuff :\
MKV or matroska is an opensource effort to create the best a/v container evar. This is in contrast to other container formats such as avi, ogm, mpg, vob, mp4, quicktime, realmedia, asf/wmv, etc. So far it's the only format you can mux realvideo into (other than rm/rmvb obviously), but it works and therefore you can use it to combine RealVideo with any audio format or likewise RealAudio with any video format. You can also mux subs in and eventually this container will have all the nifty features ogm has plus more. Why am I explaining this, christianhjw registered here just to whore mkv.

I'll write a quick guide for encoding good RV and muxing it to matroska for you losers.

i think i like RM now. I was just playing around and i made a R9 encode that is about 15MB smaller then a 2pass xvid encode. The footage i used was the GITS:SAC opening. I ripped it from the R2 dvd. The res is set to 720x400 using avisynth. The target bitrate for the R9 was set to 2276kb/s. The xvid is about 3762kb/s, give or take. The xvid uses 128kb/s CBR LAME audio. The R9 is using 132kb/s audio. The picture quality is ,IMO, exactly the same. I have bad eyes so i could be wrong. i would host the two but one being 41MB and the other being 25MB... i don't have room. I must test some more! but now i need to sleep, i have to get up in 5 hours >.<
