Wow I disagree with you guys. I thought it was fairly well-accepted, even among non-dub haters, that the Escaflowne dub was bad. I mean Hitomi sounds like a squeaky Valley girl, Allen is voiced by the same man who did Vegeta's voice in Dragonball Z (!!! and he still has that slighty raspy voice for a character that is gentle and an honorable knight), Vaughn can't scream (This is for Balgus! This if for FaRnelia! This is for my CAR!!! ARRRRRR I have no emotion), etc. I mean I don't like dubs period, but this one has even LESS emotion behind it IMO.

At the same time, how can you compare them to Seki Tomokazu and Maaya Sakamoto?

Atomic, I sure hope you're watching it subtitled

. I think it adds to it well..being the original and all

If you were to go so far, you could of made a diff account and make this post in agreement with phade and he could then procede to delte the account after the joke was over. Adleast thats what i would do

no that wouldn't work ... then the picture would have had no meaning ... or less meaning then it already did ... Other wise dwchang would ahve treated me like any noob who can't tell Filet Mignon(sp?) from 3 week old pork chops.

He wasn't so bad, you know he also did Zechs in Gundam Wing (I'm about 80% sure). I actually like his voice.

Yeah he did. Look how you use the word "wasn't so bad." You still acknowledge it wasn't good

You must admit though (if you've listened to the original track) that the Japanese VA gave Allen a much more kind and gentle voice.

See, here's where I disagree, the character of Allen shouldn't have a voice that's too gentle. It loses all realism for a warrior of his calibur. Plus I think the english VA really shined in the battles with Van, those are the only moments where I felt he DID better than the Japanese VA. In the long run you're right though, I'd place the Japanese VA just over the English. However, its not too big a difference in quality for me.

I do apologize for starting this up, but it is required in my response. I do hope it does not ignite a sub/dub war.

I think you have a very big misconception about the word "DUBBING." By it's very definition a dub can in no way be superior to the ORIGINAL. See that word? Original. It is impossible for something that is being dubbed OVER to be superior to what was originally recorded and the original INTENT of the creator. By it's very definition, a dub is one iteration down. Given, you can be pretty damn close (like Bebop), but never superior.

At the same time, this'll come across as pretty mean, but who are you to say what Allen should and shouldn't sound like? Did you create the show? Did you come up with the character? I think the only one capable of making such a decision is the creator since they conceptualized the entire show and characters. They obviously "heard" something when making the character and thus their qualifications. BTW that's the reason I fundamentally hate dubbing (in ANY other language be it Japanese -> English, English -> Spanish, etc.).

The creator chose Allen's voice to be gentle to illustrate his more gentle traits...the things that Hitomi as well as all the other females admire. He may be a great warrior, but the fact he is gentle and kind is what makes him an interesting character. This voice talent choice was a wise one and enhances the character (which is why the original choices were made).

I hope this makes sense. I don't at all claim that people MUST watch it this way. It's live and let live, but at the same time it does irk me when people claim something being better than what the own creator chooses. In this case, it happened to be gentle

I think I already mentioned something about this before.

TBH, of all the dubs that I've seen - Escaflowne may be the only one I don't really hate. (Although I have been spared from any dubs that came out in the last 2 years)

Reason being, unlike most dubs out there, this one actually features acting. Which, in face of the general trends today, is quite remarkable - just look at the Matrix and see the wonders of today's culture of non-acting.

Inaccuracies and personal dislikes aside, I think for a dub it's quite decent.

However, the general rule of dubs is still true - they're never as good as the original and they always distort the athmosphere in the anime. I think the athmosphere is where they really fall down, not so much the characters or storyline. I tried playing Love Hina and X/1999 dubs but it just didn't work - they messed up the feel of anime, made it look sort of wrong and unrepresentative of the real thing.

Escaflowne does the same, yea, but at least there still is a certain athmosphere and some degree of acting in the dub. It's not like the original, but at least it has something to offer.

But still, in the end it's no contest - the original is better. Many characters have a very different nature there than in the dub, and that's pretty important.
