AVI's hate me.. O_o

Post by Hitori » Sat Jul 12, 2003 11:50 pm

Yes they do.. Very weird...

Ever since I got a 120 gig drive to store all the AMVs I've been collecting...
All(on the new drive and other drives) of my avi files won't let me move, rename, or delete...
I've never had this problem before...
(got the new drive a week ago)

The error message I get:
Stupid Windows Error Message wrote:Error Deleting File or Folder

Cannot delete [FILE]: It is being used by another person or program.

Close any programs that might be using the file and try again.
And I know it's not being used by another person or program... -_-
It even does it offline...

Specs:

Athlon XP 1800+
MSI KT333
512 Ram
Windows XP Pro [SP1]

(I've been working with the same setup for about 2 years.)

I know that configuration very well ^^ - its not that!

if you can not rename it, then another program is trying to play it -or- is using it.

it is not a flaw in Windows; some program is using that file and the API won't let you touch it while it is in use . . . therefor, you need to find-out which program is using that file ^^

From what DannyWilson was telling me is that I might need to check the IDE Controller card that the drive is attached to...

This is very weird...

I've looked in the Ram Usage and it looks normal...
Even seeing what applications were running...
Checked the drive configuration...
Everything...

It happens to all avi files on my system...
I'll post later on my results for the controller card..

One thing you might want to try... if your Windows system is opening up the AVI file to preview it when you're looking at it in explorer, try turning it off (should be in folder options somewhere...)... I think sometimes if it's accessing it to preview it for you, it might interfere with performing things involving changing the file. Just a thought.

I had a similar problem. I produced a corrupted avi and XP wouldn't let me delete the file.

Then I found this article

you can also
There's a better way to unregister shmedia.dll from the system. All you have to do is run "REGSVR32 /U SHMEDIA.DLL", and it'll be removed from the system. No potentially dangerous registry editing required. If you need it back in, just run "REGSVR32 SHMEDIA.DLL", and next login, it should be active again.
