Master Archive Fundraising
OK... I kind of poked a bit in my last post...
As for a bit of background...
I run a behind the scenes master archive of videos. For those who don't know I help with the technical side (in various ways) of music videos for: Otakon, AWA, Fanime, Anime Central, MTAC, JACON, Animazement, Yaoi-Con, and a couple tohers i can't announce yet. This ranges from being an integral part (AWA), to just providing technical assitant (JACON), to simply running the FTP submissions (Yaoi-con). I do this for many reasons, mainly becasue I love music videos, and wish to help maintain the video quality as high as possible.
I use various tools and equipment to handle this. But currently one of my main peices of equipment is going to run out of space. The master archive, which is a 600 gig master file server. I currently only have 50-60 gig free on it. this is a problem since that amount of space won't last past AWA. The current machine is maxed out and can't be expanded anymore. I had budjeted for a new one in my own fiannces... but recent problems has pushed that back until early next year... which is a little to late...
how does this effect you? Directly... very little... since I can assum most of you don't know who I am or what I do. I have very little visible effect on the convnetions, but I do alot of work behind the scenes to make some of the contests you submit to run smoothly. In fact, the master archive will probably have the least effect on all of you, since it stays at home. But... i use it as a master repository of the videos that all of you submit... the high quality MPEG-2 master i either make or you submit. So this is not specific for any con (well... maybe awa... since they have the VAT... and maybe other cons... but thats's not official yet)... but is still for the cominuty
A new Master Archive will cost $1772
$912 8 x 160GB hard drives
$284 3ware 7810B 8 channel RAID-5 controller card
$300 CPU/Motherboard/RAM/Net card/Video card/Firewire card/System Hard drive/Optical Drive
$80 Server Tower Case (9 external drive bays)
$100 for a 650W power supply
$96 8 x ATA/133 Drive cage for a 5.25" bay
what would eb a good way to raise funds for this? In the last fund raiser post I made... i was told that being to vague ments that the question could tno be answered... well... this should be very specific... what is acceptable ways to raise money specifically for that?

as AD said.... i don't want to have to remove any videos...
I have one video that was made in 1982... there is a good history of music videos... that can easyly be lost... every video is precious... to me and to at least someone else...
I guess... the point of the master archive is to have a record... the travel computer and the con computer has a much spaller drive... but i would like a place to store all the masters and to keep a good record

Well, that makes sense. If you have a donation page up, I'd see if I could donate. Money is really tight right now though so I dunno...
It would probly be a good idea to try asking for donations at cons. There's a ton of people there with too much money that they're just gunna blow on junk anyways :p
