For the record, Zelda only barely qualifies as an adventure game because the majority of the game is manipulating items in your inventory and if it was based soley on it's adventure gaming merits, would suck really hard; Reason being because 90% of the time that item is a key to a locked door or something similar.
Real adventure games not only involve item manipulation, but item manipulation in the form of a puzzle solving (for lack of a better description.) situation. Here are a list of real adventure games.
Space Quest 1-6
Police Quest 1-4
The Secret of Monkey Island 1 & 2
The Curse of Monkey Island
Escape of Monkey Island
Kings Quest 1 - however the hell many there are
And the Myst games.
So while Alucard is right about Zelda technicaly being Action/Aventure, the Adventure part is there only because of the remidial and uninspired item manipulation (not to insult the Zelda games, I love them just as much as anyone else.) And another reason why Zelda is NOT an RPG is because not only of it's lack of any sort of stat based battle system or leveling, but because it is also uses a real time battle system, which stands in stark contrast to the games which set the standard for role playing like AD&D Shadowrun and GURPS, which use Turn based battle systems.

So in other words, one part of the community is waging war on another part of the community because they take their community seriously enough to want to do so. Then they tell the powerless side to get over the loss cause it's just an online community. I'm glad people make so much sense." -- Tab
