Post by Bebop0083 » Wed Jul 02, 2003 5:02 pm

ok a long time ago i had two crashes on my computer. for some reason the dvd player on it doesnt work any more. i even installed the programs to get to play but they dont play. in my windows media player version it detects it then it gives a red signal on it. is there any way i can fix this? plus my cd player doesnt work as well. i have to use my dvd drive to play my audio cds. but my cd burner works ok though. any suggestions??

Do the DVDs load at all? (Try browsing the disc as you would a data disc) If they don't load at all, I'd recommend cleaning the laser lens (on any drive that won't read the disc)

what model of DVD drive is this, and what version of Windows?
any other specs will help. I got a few theories, but those will help me figure it out.
About the CD player that doesn't play CD's, if they play, but no audio comes through, then you are missing an audio cable that goes from the CD player to the Motherboard/sound card (should be a black connector w/ 4 pins, that usually has a grey jacket)
If it gives any errors, describe when it gives you the error (what do you do to get it) and what does the error say.

Well you got me stumped, but since I like challenges, and hate to not be able to figure something out, I don't want to give up. I hope you don't mind working on your puter.

Okay, for the DVD player. By what type I mean, is what brand is the drive. It will normally say right on the front. (Teac, Sony...).
Will the DVD drive play CD's and everything else normally, just won't play DVD's?
If that's the case, then it is just the software, and we should be able to get you some nice free DVD software easily. (But I recommend PowerDVD. Haven't tried NVDVD yet, but hear it's good too. WinDVD is the other big name, but I don't like it that much (just my preferance though))

As for the CD player. What IDE channel is it on (if you don't know, or know how to tell, let me know)
When the computer crashed before, what was the crash, and how did you fix it? And have you tried Lots of CD's? The times I have been able to find that error message, it only popped up part of the time, and not all of the time. (though as of yet I haven't found a reason, or solution)

I don't need these yet, but the following specs I think we will need before this is out. As as always, answer what you can, and let me know what you need help with.

Computer type and model
Processor type and speed (IE AMD Athlon XP 1800 or Intel P3...)
Motherboard Model
I need to know every device in an IDE slot, and where it is located (IE 20 gig hard drive in primary master...)
Ram (type and speed if applicable)

and another thing, if you know how, get into BIOS and see if your drives show up fine there.
That's all I can think of for now, so lets see what you can find out on that, and we will solve this.

well the computer crash was bad shutdown. i had to renistall everything. the dvd player plays on cds. ive tried my whole anime collection on the dvd player. nothing. notta. it detects it but wont play. i thought i would need a codec for it or some thing. it likes my cds though. but my cd player hates them. as for the model of the dvd player. it does not say. just says dvd rom on it. its buy dell blame them. i should be able to get into BIOS ok to figure everything else out. but in the meantime in its a pentuim(SP) 4 processor

okay, it's a Dell. I can find out most of the specs myself then, if you can get the model #. It should say on the tower somewhere. Like Dimension 4600.

the DVD shouldn't need a codec/driver to play DVD's. It is either Hardwear decoding, which doesn't need one, or software decoding, which would use the DVD software. We will test the DVD software, but I need to get home first to test some free DVD software, that way I don't send you the link of some software that won't work very well. Then when we determine if that's the problem or not, we can choose which DVD software you want to use.

As far as the CDRom it could be a driver problem, but rather than give you a generic ATAPI driver, I want to get one for that CD Rom specifically, which getting the model number of the Dell puter should help out there.
